I slugged the bore of my M91/30 and it turned out to be a .313 bore so the .311 bullets I use for my M39 were a bit too small.
I buy my casted bullets from one of our gun club members and he also had the .313 casted bullets.
I started to reload some of the .313 bullets using S&B brass and S&B primers.
The Federal primers I use in my Lapua brass do not fit into the primer pocket of the S&B brass.
The S&B primer pocket is too small for the Federal primers.
The COL of the “new” bullet turned out to be 73.35mm (2.88”).
Made some pictures of both the .311 and the .313 bullets.
There’s very little difference in diameter between the two bullets, but the .313 will not fit the Mosin Nagant M39 that I own.
The M39 has a .310 bore and the .311 bullets are just perfect for this weapon.

It sounds very logical to me.
You are right about one thing though, we can't see what's going on at the time of the ignition.
Like I said, I was taught that the gas check shouldn't be below the neck but no one ever explained why.
I have to add that I never asked another question about it because I never had any problems with seating a cast bullet.
About the gas checks.
I don't know which type of gas checks were used on the .313 bullet.
I'll ask him tomorrow evening.
