I replenished the .30-06 rifle ammo that I burned off in Arizona recently. The loads are 146 gr. milsurp military FMJBT bullet over 49.0 gr. IMR 4895, lit off with a CCI #34 primer. Remember, reloading for the M-1 rifle includes loading into the en bloc clips.



As usual, case preparation was the biggest part of the job. The fired brass that I brought back from Arizona was more beat-up than usual. For one thing, the M-1 chews the cases up a bit on the heads, and for another, the range had a concrete pad in the firing line. Some of the cases landed on their mouths on the concrete which caused a bit more work.

Re. the IMR 4895. So long as I have used the loading guidelines (such as published in American Rifleman and others) for M-1 rifle specific loads, I have never had problems with accuracy with my rifle. I also have kept to FMJ milsurp or milsurp equivalent (like Hornady 150 gr. FMJ BT) bullets.

DuPont IMR 4895 is one of two propellants originally used in M-2 Ball .30 caliber Army ammunition. It was the only propellant used in Match ammo. According to the US Army tech manual (TM 43-0001-27), the specified load was 50.0 grains of IMR 4895. Of course, the IMR 4895 that the original military manufacturers used was not exactly the same as contemporary, cannister grade IMR 4895 that is available to us. However, the loading data specific to the M-1 rifle that the NRA has published in American Rifleman over the years shows 48.5 to 50.0 grains of cannister grade IMR 4895 using the 150 grain bullet. 49.0 grains works nicely in my M-1; I have tried 48.0 grains and you can tell the difference. The action gets clunky and once in a while will miss a stroke on reloading with 48.0 grain loads.

When I prepped the cases for these loads, I used my typical liquid case cleaner for the first pass, let them dry, then after resizing, dishwashing detergent and hot water to clean the case lube off. A small number I had to clean up the scorching on the case neck by hand. So, the finished product doesn't come out sparkling nail new like commercial ammo, but looks more like military ammo with a clean but slightly dull finish on the case.

you guys are drivin me nuts - i really want to go to the range with my M1 but its below zero and not gettin nice for the next week ,
