From every thing I have ever read or heard, modern .45-70 ammo is loaded to BP pressures so it can be fired in old rifles.

UMC .38 spl. ammo should be completely safe in your Victory model as long as it is in good shape.

Reportedly the commercial 45-70 is safe for the trapdoor. On the bad side, I got horrid groups with a bullet that light. I tried 300 and 350 grain bullets. Very poor accuracy, I felt it was a waste of powder the groups were so poor. 405 grain bullets do much, much better.

i hear you on condition , thank you for the quick responce , ive been carfull to buy good quality-condition pieces but i do check them out to be sure ,

my big concern was to be sure i understood the "loading logic" of commercial ammo , i beleive they dowload to the low end of the spec to accomadate the lawyers , but i needed that reinorcement that i was reading the nomenclature correctly ,

im not wanting to shoot a lot - just a bit for now and occasionaly in the future , ive got new stuff to shoot on a regular basis

Hey, since it's a BP rifle, why not just load up some BP loads for it? I think you would have a lot of fun with it.

Yes, its messier but thats part of shooting a historical rifle.

There are some companies that load "modern" ammo in .45-70 that is too hot for the trapdoors. Rem., Win & Federal are OK. If you don't want to fiddle around with the BP, I've gotten along well for years using the Lee 405gr flat point and 22gr of 2400 in my trapdoor carbine. Lyman handbook says that 11-15gr of Unique will work as well, but I've never tried it.-TR

**** no way would I shoot 1880 fps ammo out of your trap door rifle****

remember Pete that is with a whimpy 300 grain. I do agree with Pete though, jacketed bullets are not good for a trapdoor. Lead cast is the route. Maybe if you beg right someone will load you up some casts and send you a small assortment....for a reasonable fee....

I wrote Federal about those rounds, and I was wrong. They said it was NOT for the Trapdoor.
Their response..""It is not designed for your vintage firearm."
Sorry""

no problem M14man - i appreciate the update and your diligence ,

but id already decided against them based on the other comments - i do not want to damage a rifle i just want to shoot them to get the 'feel' of them
