I've always used just plain wheel weights when I cast bullets for the smokeless cartridges & they work fine for me Martin. I'm too lazy to fool around with making alloys I guess :lol -TR

Thanks for all your replies.

@Pete
Got your PM and replied.
Thanks. :D

@TR
Thanks TR.
I think I'll just start using the wheel weights.
I can always "dive" into making my own alloys.

@LoLo
Thanks LoLo, I needed that info.
Very few people over here use the LEE sizers.

About the wheel weights.
I have to keep my eyes open over here.
Since January 1st 2005, it is forbidden to use lead wheel weights.
They use zinc weights now.

Does anybody know what would happen if I would mix a zinc weight with the lead ones.

Here's a picture of the zinc (Zn) wheel weight.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Martin,

From all I have read zinc is considered a contaminant and will cause huge problems even in very small amounts in lead. Bullets will not cast well.

Thanks for the info Pete.
I appreciate it.

I got lots of "pure lead" standing around here.
I use it for both my Vetterli and the Dutch Beaumont.
Can I mix it with the wheel weights?????

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

It mixes easily - a higher temp on your pot will help that way. Antimony is another useful metal for casting bullets.

If there is some way you can buy the metals separately, you can make your alloy more precisely by measuring the amounts. Also very useful is linotype metal if you can buy that in Europe. SW

I received a bucket full of wheel weights from a colleague.

Image

All I have to do is pick out the zinc weights and just melt the rest.

Ready to be melted. :grin: :grin: :grin:

About the pure lead.
We call it "roof lead" over here and use it (among other things)to seal the gaps between a wall and a roof.
How much of the "roof lead" can I mix with the wheel weights to get a bullet hard enough to shoot in a Mosin Nagant???

Image
"Roof lead"

For now.........I just start collecting wheel weights.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Thanks LoLo.
That's the answer I wanted to hear.
I've got lots of roof flashing lead...way to much for use only in my Vetterli and the Beaumont BP rifles.
I do not know at what velocity my bullets fly, but I'm afraid it 's a bit over 1600 fps(487 m/s or meters per second).
Does a mix of 75% wheel weights and 25% roof flashing lead solve this problem or is it better to use 100% wheel weights??

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin
