I recently re-ordered some reloading supplies, and saw where Wideners had some IAI Israeli military type bullets for sale. In that I had gotton some last year, I was quite pleased with the accuracy out of their 62 grain FMJ with cannalure. They only had 62 g FMJ-SS109 steel core with cannalure, and 62 g FMJ without cannalure. I decided to order 500 of each and see how they performed as compared to the previously purchased bullet. So off to the range this AM, a beautiful windless 82° day in Florida. Now these tests are not scientific, but are done too see if the loads will be later used as plinking loads or 'target'. The measurements were done after at home.
All the loads were the same..25.3 grains of BLC2 behind the 62 grain bullets and loaded to a OAL of 2.27". I first shot 2 ten shot groups with my standard test ammo which was the ammo bought last year. This was the ammo the new stuff was trying to beat.The 50 yd groups measured .69 + .81... or a .75 average. Now these are not match heads but standard FMJ type bullets. Pretty decent. I then fired 3 groups of SS109 and got groups of 1.44 + 1.31 + .88 for a 1.21 average. That's a half inch bigger group average wise, but I take note that one group was only .88. I then move to the 62 grain bullet that had no cannelure. The 2 10 shot groups were both .94" A quarter covers them up. Now I go back to fire 2 more of my standard loaded last year.. I got 2 groups significantly larger than the first ones. 1.19 + 1.44. Now I am confused; one group averaged .75 this one 1.32. Do you know what the difference was? The second group was a mixture of cases, probably 6 different type cases. I usually don't do that but loaded a box with leftovers...
I didn't come up with any solid conclusions except to know the bullets are not garbage. The steel core had the highest average but there was one small gruop. The new 62 grain stuff did fairly well, and I got a good lesson in that varied cases will significantly open up the group. This ammo seems to be really decent for non-match bullets...and though there was no "conclusive beyond a shadow of a doubt result", it only means one thing...We will have to to the test again sometime!!! Oh Boy!!!!!
