I find that my 91/30's do better with lighter bullets than heavier ones. I am currently using .311" 147 grain FMJBT's with .45 grains of H4895. Here's a 100 yard target.

Thanks for the tip gandog56.
BTW....good shooting.
I got a few 174gn .311 Sierra's left.
I'll keep trying to get more accuracy out of them.
I already checked at a nearby gun dealer.
He has the 150gn Sierra .311 SPT in stock.
I just might pay him a visit.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Here's an update on my ammo tests for my M91/30 PU.
Instead of the 174gn I used the Sierra 150gn FBSP bullet and I must say that I'm very pleased with the result.
Some loading data first:
Case: S&B (53.60mm)
Primer: S&B
Bullet: Sierra 150gn FBSP
I used 2 different loads:
1) 27,8gn N110
2) 28,0gn N110

COL: 72.60mm

First the 27.8gn load.
On this target my POA was "the bottom of the black" as we say over here.
I changed that to dead center with my 2nd set of 5 shots as you can see in the picture.
I found it strange that with each set of 5 shots there was one that hit the target further to the right.
All in all I'm very pleased with these first results.

Next was the 28.0gn load.
POA on this target was dead center.
With this load the bullets hit the target a bit to the right and......strange but true.....again one shot in each set of 5 hit the target not further to the right, but a bit down this time.

Image

You see that 0.2gn makes a difference with this fast burning powder.
My conclusion is that my PU likes the lighter, 150gn bullets best.

Next time I'll try 2 different loads again (27.9 and 27.5gn N110) and see what happens.
I'll keep you all posted.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

New update on my ammo tests for my M91/30 PU.

Some loading data first:
Case: S&B (53.60mm)
Primer: S&B
Bullet: Sierra 150gn FBSP
One new load
27,9gn N110
COL: 72.55mm

POA was dead center.
Best group was 7.5cm / 2.95 inch (blue dots)
Group is OK IMHO.
All I have to do now is adjusting the scope.

I think I found the right load and will keep using these load data for my M91/30 PU. :D

Well.........that's not entirely true.
I did have some cast bullets in cal .313 that I just had to try.
I used the same type of powder, but reduced the load to 18gn N110.
OAL went to 75.60mm.
Cases and primers manufactured by S&B.
Because of the reduced load I had to reset the distance to 550 meters.

Here's the result after 20 shots down range.

I think I'll leave the jacketed bullets for what they are and go for the cast bullets.
Works just great on a 100 meter range.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

And cast boolets are much less expensive! 8-) I wish the freight wasn't so high - I'd send you a few pounds of linotype. Otherwise you can check with local metal dealers for small amounts of tin. It will make your boolets harder, and the alloy will fill corners more sharply. SW

Thanks SW....I appreciate that.
Just recently I found a small source for some wheel weights.
Most of the lead wheel weights are being replaced by the zinc ones. :-(
I buy the cast bullets from one of our gun club members.
He recycles the lead that comes out of the target area.
We clean the target area once a year.

As for the pure lead.....got enough of that for use in my Swiss Vetterli and Dutch Beaumont.
