Post subject:  cleaning gas cylinder M1 Garand? If using corrosive ammo?

I bought a box of m2 ball ammo, head stamp WCC 41, at gun show. I think its corrosive. I have cleaned my mosin and steyr a bunch after corrosive ammo shooting and they look fine. How hard is it to clean the garand gas system after shooting corrosive ammo? It looks like you just take off the gas valve screw and clean from there down, and then put screw back on. Is that what you guys do? Thanks for all responses, Eli.

Make sure you clean the bolt face!
Remove your op rod and gas screw and scrub the gas cylinder with a .410 brush and solvent (Hoppes#9) and patches.
Scrub the bore real well and oil everything before putting it away.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot about the bolt face. Hopefully i can make it to the range tomorrow to see how the ww2 ammo shoots. Milsurps Rule!!

Try and treat any milsurp ammo as corrosive. I other words clean your M1 after each use as if you were shooting corrosive ammo and you won't get any nasty surprises later.
Nothing like finding a rusty bore of other parts weeks after shooting to turn your guts to water.
M1 gas tube/front sight is made of stainless steel casting, that's why the park or whatever is usually gone on them. It also is why the things are somewhat corrosion resistant. Make sure you clean the gas piston portion of the op rod also.
Have fun at the range.

Remove the stock from the rifle when cleaning. The blow-by of gases will also get to the barrel underside. Some gets past the piston. Clean the bolt face also.
