It's my great great great grand dad's English made 10 ga. double barrel hammer type percussion shotgun made in 1840. Someone in the past put a heavy coat of varnish on the wood and steel. I got it off the steel but I have not figured how to get it off the wood. The gun comes apart ok but I can't get the butt plate screws out, It has a hook breech that the barrels fit into and I can't get the screw to the breech section out of the stock after taking the barrels out. I might add the screws have engraved heads and very narrow slots and I don't want to bugger them up. Someone told me to use stripper on the stock but as I said I cant get all the metal off the wood. It has a nice looking checkered walnut stock under all that old yellowed varnish. I need your help guy's. Help me come up with some deas. I want to put a hand rubbed linseed oil finish on it.

I have removed certain types of varnish from stocks by using denatured alcohol. It has no impact on the metal but you should re-oil it.

Well I took the stock off the old shotgun this weekend thought well I'll give it a try, I took denatured alcohol and a rag saturated the rag and started rubbing. It turned out to be shelac the alcohol took every bit of the shelac off the wood I was also able to clean out the checkering on the pistol grip that was filled with shelac with a old toobrush, and the acohol. The stock is completely clean and ready to rub on the BLO. I am a happy camper. :D ;)

BLO as a finish seems to be a cure-all for all your finishing choices... I need to figure out how to finish my mauser...

As for the varnish... I think I heard mineral spirits once for that...

Here is an article that might give you some ideas

hope it helps

Good article on wood work there. I'll prob. use linseed oil on the on this shotgun stock since the gun was made in 1840, I imagine it originally had a linseed oil finish.
