I lifted these from a photoset of the fighting there. Most pics related to mud, dealing with lice and general misery. German troops were also miserable but seemed to endure less mud.
There were several group photos in which everyone had been tagged with 'killed' 'wounded' or 'missing. Very few men shown weren't in one of the three categories.
Among the various general staffs, there seemed to be a culture in which war by attrition was acceptable. We see this in much of WW1 like here and Verdun for just two examples.
Which leads me to believe the generals of EACH country should have been hanged for crimes against their own country! SW
