I found another photoset of Russian WW1 pics. My photohost account is too stuffed to post very many but I found this one interesting.

Shown is a mixed 'route march' column of German & Austrian troops. Is it just me or do the Germans seem to be a bit more squared away than the austrian boyz?? Gew 88 rifles?

Some of the other pics were captioned as 'Galacia' or 'Mazursk Lakes'. I have no idea if these troops are in that region. IIRC, the Russkies pretty much got their a$$ handed to them in WW1 which was one of the things that precipitated the revolution.

More of same in the military history forum of 'another site'. SW

The rifle the German on the far right has appears to sport a Lange Visier sight, so its probably a Gew.98. Most histories will tell that the Austro-Hungarian army was the lesser of the two armies - consider that with the variety of languages spoken, they had to use "Army Slav", a vocabulary of about 80 simple commands that every soldier had to memorize, since most all the officers spoke German while the troops spoke about a dozen different ones. 'Hogger is right, with the exception of the Brusilov Offensive
of 1916 which nearly got over the Hungarian border, the Russians got their asses handed to them even by the AH troops. -TR

Nice to see these old photos showing up more these days, hopefully many of these glimpses of another age will survive.

Awhile back a lady on a History Forum I used to visit posted a photo she'd just found of her Grandfather as a British Mounted Trooper, the coolest part of his kit was the Japanese 6.5 Carbine he was armed with. It was one of those the Japanese sold to the British.
When stocks of Enfields caught up with demand the Arisakas were withdrawn and given to Arabs fighting the Turks.

Unfortunately that forum is now defunct. If I saved the image it would be on the fried PC in storage. Hopefully the image will be passed on to some history site or museum collection.
