1. The figure of 55,000 refers to soldiers who saw combat; the number of Africans involved as auxiliaries or otherwise is likely to include several hundred thousand. Troops were drawn from Nigeria, Gambia, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Nyasaland/Malawi, Kenya and the Gold Coast. Figures for South Africa are given separately.
2. The British West Indies regiment drew men from across the Caribbean, including Barbados, Bahamas, Honduras, Grenada, Guyana, Leeward Islands, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago; the bulk came from Jamaica.

The french carried the highest percentages! Hmmmmm, seems like they would have learned something here, and done better in the 2nd WW.

What I find interesting is the relatively low number of casualties suffered by the Germans as against the combined casualties of their several opponents. Add up the British, French, Belgian, American and whoever else fought them and them compare to German casualties. I'm not forgetting the Russians either, its just that I don't know who to divide their casualties between their German and Austro-Hungarian enemies. I figure the Germans must have caused easily at least half of the Russian casualties.

Don't forget Newfoundland!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total number of casualties wearing a Newfoundland uniform was around the 2400 mark. Figure is actually higher as many Mewfoundlanders also served in British units.

new found respect for the french , did not realise their force was this large or burden this heavy , this may say something about their performance in WWII- ive always been put off by the arrogance of degaul but perhaps looses in the first war were such that they were short on men in the second - barely a generation later , i know their underground was a force to be reconed with
