308th Infantry

My wife and I were eating at a Red Robin restaurant recently and I was examining one of the decorator photographs on the wall in our booth. Red Robin uses various antique signs and pictures in their interior decor.
The picture that I was looking at was a group picture of WW1 Doughboys and there was a note at the bottom that said, "Co B, 308th Infantry, Sable-Sarthe, April 1919." I made a note of this so as to look it up on the internet the next time I had a chance. Today was the first time I looked at that piece of paper that I had written the note on.
The 308th Infantry Regiment, part of the 77th Infantry Division, was the main element of the US Army that became known as "The Lost Battalion" that was cut off from the rest of the Expeditionary Force at the Argonne Forest in October, 1918. There was a movie made some years ago wherein the role of the battalion commander, Major Whittlesey, was played by Ricky Schroeder. I saw this movie and it was realistic, technically accurate, and quite moving. This battalion, plus Company K, 307th Infantry Regt., were cut off for 5 days and an one time were called upon to surrender by the Germans similar to the situation in 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge. They refused to surrender just like the Americans in 1944. The "Lost Battalion" was relieved by a rescue force.

....yeah-I saw that movie....I thought it was VERY well made and acted (even with Ricky Schroeder )....they seemed to go thru great trouble to be "authentic"...really enjoyed it and wouldnt mind watching it again..

Yes, Mario, sometimes it's hard to take Ricky Schroeder seriously. He did well in the movie at hand, however. He didn't come off well as a tough-guy cop in "NYPD Blue" I didn't think.

I think it's because he is still thought of as ricky instead of Rick as he's trying to develop now.
