Shown here is IJN Nagato as found by the first ships into Japan after the surrender. The fuel had been pumped out for other ships, and the secondary guns removed to be used as shore batteries against the anticipated Allied invasion.

The ship shows the ill effects of having finished at 2nd place in the battle of the Phillipine Sea. Near misses sprung the hull so badly, the ship was barely able to return to port while direct hits have sure made a mess of the bridge area!!!

After the war, it was towed to Bikini for the A-bomb test & it yet lays there in the depths with the half-life of the radioactives slowly counting down to the day when divers can liesurely inspect the remains.

Thus ended an empire. SW
