My uncle that passed away last week was at Bastogne, He often said it was one of the roughest fights he was involved in. He said when the germans made the break through they were everywhere. He told me one time they got caught out in a open field where there were a large number of U.S. dead they laid down beside the dead and tried not to move, one german soldier came by and was looking at them, my uncle said he laid there holding his breath snd trying to be still. The german came so close he stepped on my uncle's hand.
