I don't mean to dig up old threads, but this particular one strikes home for me. My dad was on the Fanshaw Bay during the Battle off Samar. I have all his Navy memorabilia. He passed away December of 2006.

...please...!!! ...dig up all the old threads you like... ...nobody gets upset... ...did your dad go to any of the reunions????...Frank used to go to all of them until last year...(they may have even met... )now his legs are so bad he doesnt go anymore....you may be interested in a recently published book that came out that is extremely well documented and detailed of the battle....richly illustrated with pics too...titled "The Battle Off Samar-Taffy III at Leyte Gulf"...by Robert Jon Cox...well worth the $$$
...I got copies of the 1st edition for Frank and I...its now in the 5th edition...

know your wedding awas a big deal - shoulda asked if there was a conflict me thinks , you gotta respect your elders a little they have so little left

i hear you - i was once your age and thought as you do , i find no fault really , it is your time and place , and so often we dont get to choose that , and i respect that you did and all that goes along with it ,

now in my 60s i realize just how little time is left , i think had i been your father i might have chosen differently but i did not walk in his shoes and no not of his health ,

i do know that each year there are more things i want to do and so little time left to do it , and i also realize the quality of time i have left may not afford me all that i want from life in these later years ,

i have suddenly become aware that my past life of aquiesting to the demands of others has come to the transitional point of my demands becoming more critical , i have less time to demand and far less time to share thus its become far more important to spend it with those that understand that ,

while ill not ever criticize your choices , i will point out that ill not accept the criticisim of others these days as easily as i used to ,

we ALL have one life to live after all

...yup...got the Tin can sailors one...and in the Battle of Samar book Frank is pictured in it as he buried his best buddy at sea after the battle...i had a lotta time spent with him as he told me of those days...and some things he would just stop...and get all wet eyed...and say "sorry...i just cant say more..."

I have original copies of "A Short History of the Fanshaw Bay" and "Escort Carriers in Action", both published shortly after the war. Both have pictures unseen elsewhere, very interesting pictures of CVE's, their crews, and life aboard them. I also have a few pics my dad took of the Fanny Bee.

Dad was on the Corregidor & saw the St Lo get it.

He was a machinists Mate & was below decks when it actually happened but came topside before it sunk all the way. SW
