Have you ever thought back and wondered what is was like ...or tried to put yourself in their boots?
-- Wading in from the lagoon on the 1st or 2nd day of Tarawa, those around you dropping one by one from the heavy fire ...
-- Manning a waist gun (or worse, the belly turret) on a B17 in the midst of battle, fighting back but waiting, too for your plane to be hit...
-- Sitting in a submarine 250 feet down, undergoing a depth charge attack, listening to the creaks & strains, waiting for the next one...
Over the years I have tried to empathize with what these young men went through. The sheer courage, guts and bravery required from some of the many events they found themselves in.
Not sure how they did it.
Less sure that I could have done it...
