One thing for sure: if the ball turret gunner survived, he sure had one heck of a story (and picture!) to show his family.

You are correct! The narrative that accompanied the photo stated the damage was the result of the dreaded "88", which claimed it's fair share of these beautiful `Forts. Still, I don't know what kept this one in the air long enough to get home. Have to think the crew most certainly deeply discussed bailing out...
I too, have read of a ball turret gunner who was unable to exit that claustrophobic sphere. I can't fully recall whether it was one of those 'urban legends' that took on a life of it's own or whether an actual occuring event. If the latter, I hope it was quick. A lot of different ways to go -- that would not be high on my list.

I've read it too...here is one version, even with the names...

The picture shows one of the 17's that made it home and broke in two after landing. That is why aircrews prefered the 17 over the B-24. She would bring home the crews even when shot to scrap.
