Excellent article. thanks for the posting. And I guess if that fowler was what he was use to toting it wouldn't make a difference, to him, but as for me that thing would probably kick my but humping that thing around with all the stuff it took to keep it going much less the stuff for my own needs. Might even make a 3 day load out with a 14 seem light.

figure each ball would weigh approx 1.25 oz. The fowler itself is about a 13 gauge bore

There was even a 1 man submersible... either in the revolution or war of 1812. The guy paddled close to a Brit ship - stuck a mine into the wooden hull with a harpoon - peddled backwards and *pow!!** It apparently worked.

The Turtle....Rev war. It carried charges (torpedoes) that were supposed to attach to the hull of a ship via a screw (operated from inside) the attack on the "Eagle" was not a success as the screw hit up against an iron plate instead of copper sheeting & the first charge drifted off & exploded harmlessly in the water. However it did alarm the Brits greatly!

All can say is that was one brave man that got into that thing and took it out.
(I hope he got to drink all the beer from that oversized barrel before they converted it. )
