Yesterday's Weapons Forums

I was telling a close friend about this recently & had it on my mind last night while playing trains. I mentioned how I really don't like fireworks. The colored light displays are all right, but fire poppers... not so much.

The first year or three after I got out, I flat had to leave town on the 4th. I'd go to the ranch to hang out with Mom & Dad. When kids light off a 500 pack of Black Cats, it sounds very much like an "exchange of compliments". Or something. I could only take so much of it & still don't care for it to this very day. The sound reminds me of another place and time.

The mind is a wonderful organ. It never fails to amaze me how some things stay with you... I was in college not long after I got out, and after class, I was driving over to the apartment with friends to have a few beers while studying for an upcoming exam. We actually did get in a little studying that way.

On the way, I was driving through a Mexican neighborhood. From between two parked cars, a little boy dashed out with a toy rifle and was shooting at us. He was having a great time playing.

Without thinking, I bailed from the moving car and "assumed the position" to return fire. Took a few seconds to realize I didn't have a rifle and wasn't where I thought I was.

My friend in the front seat quickly had the car under control & pulled it to the curb. The little boy laughed and ran away. The other two friends were laughing their butts off.

"What a dummy!! Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaa!" Dummy indeed. That I did such a thing still bothers me. Back at the apartment, I shotgunned a beer to stop the shaking & we went over the chapters to be tested, asking questions in turn.

The study group broke up before supper time. Later that evening, I took my gf out for a drive. She really didn't understand what was going on ( I didn't actually want her to understand the cause & effect) but she was a comfort.

I will always think well of her. But she was 17 and I was 20... too young to get serious and we went our separate ways. May God grant she has had a happy life. Lord have MERCY she was pretty.

Please forgive me for babbling, Friends... I'll put the crayons away now. SW

They say crayons can be very comforting. And you don't even have to stay in the lines.
