I was discussing this with a friend & we talked about what was around then. R Crumb drew the 'Fabulous Furry Freak Bros' and 'Fat Freddy's Cat' - funny stuff!

There was another artist who drew the "Keep On Truckin' icon, but I can't recall his name. He was heavily into the acid culture while Crumb was more in tune with the no-brain pot heads. Still funny comix, though.

My favorite was Vaugh Bode' who drew the 'Deadbone Mountain' series for Penthouse. It was popular for its ironic outlook on the war and sympathy for the lowly grunt. It was very dark humor, though & I think that's why I liked it. Maybe I should say EXTREMELY dark humor. :? An acquired taste in any case.

I recall seeing a lot of one liners from his comix engraved on Zippo lighters. Nearly every grunt carried a Zippo even if they did not smoke... very useful for burning off leeches... lighting the blue tri-oxane tabs to heat C-rats... igniting safety fuse when blowing a mine in place...

1001 uses for a Zippo!!! ;)

Anybody else enjoy underground comix in those years? SW

SW,
I thought Crumb also drew the keep on truckin logo. I remember seeing it on a program about him.

You are right. I looked around on fleabay for underground comix & Robert Crumb did a lot more of the acid culture comix than I remembered. Probably because I was more interested in the freak Bros & Freddy's Cat.

The other artist I meant was Gilbert Shelton. SW

I remember having one underground comic and it was extremely pornographic.

Speaking of underground, during the later Vietnam war era there were a number of underground newspapers published by disaffected GI's. Most of these were published off-base near Army posts. The FBI and the Army CID spent a lot of time spinning their wheels trying to get to the bottom of these. Some of them were even printed on-post using Army equipment and materials.
