.....a pic of one of my squadron's A6's showing off the relatively new(back then)AGM-78 missle.....handy for shootig down incoming SA-2's fired at our guys while giving airshows(with live ordnance) over Vietnam....'specially near Hanoi :lol ...there'd usually be one or 2 of these hanging around-just in case....we still lost a few crews killed-and a couple which ended up POW's in the infamous Hanoi Hilton....Jeramiah Denton was the first from our squadron-and Roger Lerseth the last
.....also added one of many of our patches... ;)
....LinebackerII was the last big offesive for bombing North Vietnam to bring them to the table towards the end of 1972.....

Did Linebacker have anything to do with B-52s? In 69 & 70 both, I clearly recall seeing B-52s during the day so high you almost needed binoculars.

I know 'arc light' meant a B-52 strike. Saw a couple of those that must have been for the ho chi minh trail west of Cam Lo & Rockpile. With binoculars at night, you could sometimes see big-a$$ teak trees tumbling through the air backlighted by 750 pounder ( I think 750s) detonations.

....yup-you are correct sir ;) ....Linebacker I was earlier and so effective ,they had another one in late '72' :lol .... was a combined services effort....B-52's did the hi altitude stuff....many other aircraft,including the Thuds,and Marine and Navy F4,A4 and A6 airwings did the "lower down" stuff.......I'd highly recommend reading "Launch the Intruders" by Carol Reardon....an extremely detailed 'inside' look at the men and their families during Linebacker II....and it just happened to be about my squadron i served with....I know every single one of those fellas,and I can honestly say it was an honor to serve with them....I've recently got back in touch with a few of them-amazing how we at least still remember each other after all these years...

something about the wing in hinged position always made me uncomfortable ..............i hate heights and thinking of the wing folding at altitude just made me squirm

Linebacker II was the big push to get the North Vietnamese to agree to US and So. Vietnamese terms at the peace negotiations at the end of 1972. Here is a link to more detail on the subject:

As usual, there were all kinds of politics involved. The No. Vietnamese were trying to pressure Nixon to make concessions before the Nov. 72 elections, and Nixon's timetable was Jan. 73 when the new Congress convened. Nixon had at least as much trouble getting So.Vietnam's President Thieu to agree to terms as he did with the No. Vietnamese.

Linebacker II was bomber-heavy, whereas in the the earlier (Apr-May 72) Linebacker, tactical operations had been emphasized. The US ran out of significant strategic targets and the No. Vietnamese ran out of SAM missles by the time the operation was concluded.
