Today, I had the sad honour of attending the memorial service at the local Armoury for Sapper Stephan Stock, who was one of three members of 12 Field Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment killed by a roadside I.E.D. on 21 August, bringing to 93 the number of Canadian Forces fatalities in Afghanistan.
Although the Wikipedia article linked to below lists his hometown as Campbell River in British Columbia (his birthplace), Stephan's parents reside here in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where they are both employed by the City. My daughter (currently on maternity leave with a 5-month old) worked with Sapper Stock's mother in the Finance Department at City Hall .....
