Hey folks. New to the board and have been enjoying your posts. Anyway des anyone know how to put together and old single shot springfield 944-A? It's not a matter of how it goes together. That's easy. How to make it all happen inside the receiver is another story! I need 4 tiny hands and I don't have them. Any feedback, tricks tips or insight would be appreciated. I have a love of restoring ugly duckling guns and amateur gunsmithing. Never nt been able to work something out till now.

I feel your pain. If I had five cents for everytime I wished for a 3rd hand and prehensile tail, I'd have enough to get another drum and belt for my RPD.

I used to work on guns and found hemostats useful for such projects. From Edmund Scientific, I scored a bag of magnets in various shapes and sizes - mostly small - and those have helped a lot, too. The NRA assembly books are very much worth buying if you take guns apart very much. Persistence is the key.

It sounds like it'ss too late for another trick I use for stuff I've never seen before - make a drawing. I still do that when I need to put a new element in the dryer - eliminates the guesswork when reconnecting the wires. There can be a negative consequence if you botch that.

A former friend collected the most oddball stuff he could find and always brought them over to be cleaned. I learned a bunch that way.

Another good place to look for specific tips is 24hourcampfire.com

And welcome to the mess... :welcome: :nube:  SW

Thanks for dropping by the forum!

Pictures! I always try to take pics at every step of a tear down. Also I have found exploded diagrams like those found at e-gunparts.com helpful. The first AR lower build I did was using the exploded diagram out of the bushmaster catalogue.

Is the 944a a sidle lever or top lever breakdown? Most of the top lever's were made by Savage/Stevens

+1 on the pics, I do not take anything apart without the digicam and take pictures of every step. I have never been good at getting things back together. Thankfully my brother likes to do it so he gets to do cleaning duty.

Welcome aboard

I know I do the pic thing as well. It's deceptively simple, hammer and hammer spring, trigger and trigger return spring, triggerguard and barrel catch sping. I've had it together outside the receiver just fine. It's getting all the little holes to line up and pins to do what they're told that is holding me back! LOL

Without seeing the issue, when I have difficulty with holes/pins I usually use a pin punch of a smaller diameter to align from one side as I fidget with putting in the actual pin from the other.

I use a 1/16" pin punch as a slave to line things up - then tap in the real one. Alien archaelogists use my gun room as an artifact mine. I slip and a spring propels something over a certain velocity, it defaults to their catch basket.

***sproinggggggggg*** Never seen or heard from again! :-o

That's why I put AR lowers together in a clear plastic bag. I still slip and the spring w/ keeper pin take a trip but not very far. If I wasn't so cheep, I'd buy the little dedicated tool for that.

Trickiest thing I ever worked on? A Vergueiro bolt. On a difficulty scale of 10 they are a 35. I recited 4 full pages from the Funk & Wagnalls curse word compendium but no luck. Finally found an article on line.

Never take one apart! SW

LMAO. I think the springs go to where the missing dryer socks go! Somewhere in the universe Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis are dancing in a room full of springs and socks......

Elvis is dancing with Princess Di in a little bistro owned by an elderly German man with a small moustache. It's located in an obscure neighborhood of Ascuncion, Paraguay.

Elvis cooks and Di hops tables on busy nights.

When they are not on Mars. :crzy: :tinhat: :daz: SW

Well, instead of the 1/16 punch, I used wooden kabob skewers and I got it on the first try. Just like riding a bike all over again.......LOL Thank you
