Any proof marks under the barrels? Like 'LGE' in an oval under a crown? A lot of these are Belgian or Spanish. Crescent Arms would make up this kind of shotgun & stamp any name you wanted on it for a small fee, too. SW |

NebrHogger: Thanks! Yes, "E"over "LG" in an oval. Very crude proofs, barily readable. Also, I think a crown over "JJ" , and maybe "18.2". All metal forearm, no wood. "LAMINATED STEEL" stamped on the center rib. "301" stamped on underside of barrels on midrib, and the reciever? |

Aha! That's a Belgian proof mark. I believe it's from Liege, Belgium which was a center of activity for makers of less expensive arms. The patterns in Damascus steel can be quite attractive but is simply too dangerous to be fired. Also called "twist steel", a strip was wound around a mandrel and forge welded. A common scenario is for the joint of the weld to oxidize over the years, and it will not hold together even with the mildest black powder loads. So clean it as best you prefer and make a decorater of it. SW |
