I got this kit not long ago & dived in today. This one will take a while, but like eating an elephant, you just keep after it one bite at a time. I'd estimate it's 75% done.

Here's the kit.

There wasn't a frizzen, but our pal, kaintuck showed me which one to buy & fitted it to the lock. I started on it today & have my work cut out for me! I didn't take a before pic like I should have, but here's the barrel mostly installed.

Next comes inletting the lock & trigger guard. The lock will be tough - the shape will take a bunch of fitting - it's not even close.

Then I'll inlet the trigger guard. Not a piece of cake, but it looks a lot easier than the lock. I'll get it into the stock & then smooth up the rough sand casting.

This should keep me out of the bars for a while! ;) SW

Took a few more bites of the elephant today. It was no piece of cake, but I got the trigger guard inletted. Notice how rough it is - mucho sanding to get it smooth!

Got the lock plate in without too much drama.

Next I started on the lock. I got a lock screw in after I fitted the lock plate and got it mostly in place so I could estimate how much wood to remove.

There's still a lot of wood to remove to get the lock in place.

I mocked up the grip cap... yep - that's going to take a lot of work, too.

Rather than a template, I think somebody free handed this. Notice the barrel lug is off center and crooked. No worries! It will fit just fine! I hope! SW

Got the lock fitted - off-a to work so pics later. Also waiting on word from kaintuck on a certain item. I think i'll be filing the lock down so it will fit deeper into the stock. Had to file about .050" off the frizzen so it would clear.

PSA... walnut dust is harmful to children & other living things! **sneeze** SW

Slow going still... got the lock mostly inletted. Got a good start on the grip cap...

Maybe 15% done right now. Mucho sanding to do next! SW

they leave you a lot to do on these , but i suppose that allows for some personalization ?

Post subject:  Re: Flintlock kit - a tough one!

"A man's gotta know his limitations!" This was a never assembled kit... with no instructions. I messed around & flat could not figure out how to get the trigger in & working right. I'm not ashamed to say I can't put a model airplane together without reading the instructions, either.

Since our pal, kaintuck was between rifles, I whined around & promised to send $ so his shop foreman could have real tuna fish for the holidays if he would get the trigger in for me.

He did other work on it & now I just need to smooth & polish the brass, sand & stain the wood & harden the frizzen I had to buy since there wasn't one in the kit. Buy one already hardened? No - it has to be fitted to the lock & barrel & filing goes a lot easier on a soft part.

Thank you, kaintuck!!! Here's how it appears now - more pics as I finish it off. SW
