I sold my last knee mortar to Doss a while back, so I emailed him for some measurements. Divided them by 2 and am making a 1/2 size Type 89. Hoping to fire it using a shotgun primer to launch a 1" diameter "delrin" T-89 mortar round. If that don't work, a .25 caliber blank should.
Part 1 ..the barrel.

I don't mean to throw cold water on the project, it sounds very interesting; but, won't you run afoul of the Destructive Device rules with a bore over half inch if you make it capable to discharge anything?

I have been reading and re-reading and it seems as if the law says that the "destructive device" falls into play when it shoots a cartridge that contains it's own propellant.....either centerfire or rimfire. Black powder does not fall under the juresdiction of the BATF. There are .75 caliber smooth bore pistols..both flint lock and percussion....and 1" bore miniature cannons. I had a LaMat pistol with a 6" 20 gauge smooth bore barrel in the middle of 9 .45 caliber slugs. It could be loaded with shot or .625 round ball. The barrel of my knee mortar will neither be loaded with black powder, nor will the projectile contain any propellant...just a shotgun primer in the lower tube. I am still going over all of this ...just to be sure though......before I complete one....check my next post for my progress...it is spring loaded with no propellant at all. Just a toy.
