Post subject:  Do-it-myself muzzle crowning?

A friend at work welded me on a front sight to my concealed carry Swiss Vetterli. Before I load some BP rounds, it looks lilke it could stand to be crowned.

I've seen guys on other forums talk about a brass screw chucked up in a 1/4" drill but can't recall what abrasive.

Any advice will be sincerely appreciated!! Pics of the Swiss flamethrower shortly. SW

I don't know how much you want to spend but Brownell's sells recrowning reamers.
When I recrowned my 10-22 barrel I put it in a lathe and recut it. Turned out real nice and shoots good.

The Brass round head screw works well. Abrasive wise, rouge emery cloth-it's between 1500 and 2000 grit- is a good starting point. A dremel or similar moto tool is better than a drill, because of the rheostat speed control. Just drape a piece of the rouge emery cloth over the screw head, and let the friction do the work of keeping things even. Slower speeds, and light pressure are desirable. You can work your way up to the finer polishing compounds. Flitz metal polish is highly recommended for final cutting.

I've used a fine grit ball tip grinding stone, then followed up with 1,000 grit silicon crabide paper over the ball tipped handle of a glass cutter to polish out the hemispherical crown. Worked fine.
I've also used the round stone only and it also worked fine though not as pretty.

Somebody told me to use a mouse ball. :-o Dipped in vaseline & then abrasive. All my mice are the laser type though... I'll try to score some brass screws next time I'm over to home depot. SW

It turned out well. I used simichrome polishing stuff & it did the deal Now if the wind would ever go down, I'll try for a group. SW

Yesterday was a rip-snorter! 60mph winds with gusts of more. Blew down some of my back yard fence. Man was I ever thankful I got off my butt & cut down that dead birch!!!

So I'll go score some posts & quick-crete. Get a few things lined up before the ins adjuster passes judgement.

A PITA but small spuds compared to Mario's roof trying to relocate to another area code. SW
