Should probably approach this subject as it is more than likely to come up. Was in the local cabela's today and scored a bit of a deal on these: I have hunted with these before in .177, and they are capable of harvesting grouse. I'll have a field report hopefully soon on their accuracy. For an open package, that looks like a full tin. Couple of views showing what the actual pellet looks like. These are a not too shabby copy of the JSB Predator, which is a fine hunting pellet. They are a tiny bit lighter than the Predator at 15.4 gr. The Predators are 16.0 gr. There seems to be a shortage of them locally, and on-line. It looks like these will have to do for the interim... Regards, Doc Sharptail |

These are the Gamo .22 Rocket pellets mentioned elsewhere. 16.0 gr with a bronze ball set in the head. Pellet at left was recovered from behind a wet and rotted 1/2" pine pallet board. It expanded to a shade over .30 cal. 640 fps out of the Seneca Dragonfly pumper rifle at 15 yards. These are a bit better expansion wise than the JSB predator, but not by much. Very accurate in every .22 air rifle I've tried them in. H&N Barracuda Match Heavy, 21.13 gr. I haven't done a work-up on these yet. They may have a bit of a trajectory due to their weight. These need a bit of air pressure behind them for the driving bands to upset into the rifling. Reasonable accuracy out of medium and high power .22 air rifles. Originally designed for magnum springers of the 800 fps and better class. They've enjoyed a bit of a resurgence with the current pcp craze. Re-branded H&N magnum. These may still be available in europe. I'm not sure if there's any relation here to JSB, or not. These were very accurate out of my .177 rifles, and the tins are empty. These are 16.0 gr field points, and have good accuracy in most of my .22's. The bolts close hard over them, as the heads engage the rifling. These also seem to want a bit of velocity. I have a bit more to dig through yet. There is a Crosman re-brand of the JSB Predator called metal mags. This version suffers from inflated pricing. Finding the Predator version is a bit of money saving. Regards, Doc Sharptail |

Couldn't resist these: Possible re-branding of the Gamo Red-Fire, which are the same weight. Will have to do a side by side with both at the next pit session. There's what the actual pellet looks like. This was the deal clincher for me. The Big Blue (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) are currently 9-0. Regards, Doc Sharptail |

Another new to me pellet: Gamo "Hammer" heavy pellet in .177 cal. There's what the actual pellets look like. Bit of oxidization along the mold/die lines already. I'll have to get these used up in short order. I actually got a brief opportunity to shoot a few yesterday. There's the test bed there: an older 13-22 with the packer stock, 24' .177 bbl and steel breech kit. Rifle is on a delrin flat top piston and normally sends 8 gr class pellets down range at 790-800 fps. Scope is the Bushnell A/R series "223" 3-12X 40mm side focus adjustable objective. I'm not entirely satisfied with this scope set-up. It's overly long eye-relief puts my head a little too far back on the comb to be comfortable. I have a discovery scope around here somewhere that I should put on this platform, and leave alone.... End result at 15 yards. I haven't chronied these yet, but am suspecting mid 600's. .35 cal hole at left is the Gamo heavy. .22 cal hole at right is the Daisy 7.9 gr hollow point dome. That can bottom is not all that they passed through. They went through a potato crisp can bottom first with the soft plastic lid on it, before exiting the bottom of the coffee can. Gamo heavy entrance hole at top, Daisy h/p at lower. It was far too windy to test for group. If they show reasonable consistency, they may make a good small game pellet choice. Hopefully more on this later... Regards, Doc Sharptail |
