I've never messed around with black in 38 Special. ( this being the Black Powder Cartridge forum)

But not being stuffy about things like that, I use 3.2 grains of Bullseye with a variety of 158 grain lead bullets in my 2" S&W Model 15 CCW gun for practice. I have a crap-ton of Bullseye & it's cheep... if not especially clean.

I have my Dillon powder measure set for that right now & load 500 38s at a whack. Got a bunch loaded - now to get out & do more draw from concealed drills.

Time... there's never enough time. :velo: SW

I dug out my cartridge conversion book by Nonte & he does not list "38 Schofield". Nor does Parker Ackley in an old manual.

Listed are 38 Short Colt which is made from 38 Special cases trimmed to .745". Nonte lists a 130 grain lead bullet on 2.0 grains of Bulleseye @ about 700 fps.

38 Long Colt is 38 Spl trimmed to 1 inch even. He shows a 148 grain bullet with 2.5 grains of Bullseye & about 750 fps.

I think trail boss powder would have applications with these. Black would be simple: dip the case full and cramb a light 9mm boolet ( like 115 or 124 grain) on top. Same for any of the subs.

In a fit of not paying attention, I bid on a Pietta 1851 repro earlier yesterday. If by some chance I get it, I'll score a 38 Colt cylinder from Buffalo arms. Grafs sells brass & dies.

Mybusa told me once to put small bids on stuff to "keep track". Which works, but lately, I've been getting the bids. I think I better switch back to Steve's plan of only bidding on stuff I really want. SW

Sorry, my bad I didn't pay attention to where I was posting. And thanks for the load you gave me.

No worries. This isn't one of those sites where people get all anal about minor issues.

I have shot a LOT of 38 special - mostly when I was on the state patrol pistol team back in the day.

I was issued a case of 38 wadcutters every other month & bought more on my own. The most accurate load for ranges up to 60 yards is a 148 grain hollow base wadcutter over 2.7 grains of Bullseye.

I have a good HOT 357 load with 125 grain boolets if anybody uses one that light. SW
