Easy as pie! You will need: 1) A supply of 348 Win brass - preferably new 2) A medium size drill press 3) Any size mill bastard file 4) Your Kropatschek bolt for the try part of 'cut & try' I took the brass & file to the garage & used my cheep chink drill press - bought it from one of those "truckload tool sale" outfits. I chucked up a 348 case neck first using only moderate hand pressure so I wouldn't deform the neck. Once the case was spinning well & not likely to fly away from the chuck ( a couple did) I applied a file to the rim to approximate the bevel of the bolt face. A non-beveled case will barely work, but cutting the bevel really makes a difference. After a couple cut & tries, I pretty well had it down. I also took just a hair off the outside of the rim. Then back to the loading bench. I applied Imperial sizing wax & FL sized. That was it. They chambered & extracted just fine. Now to load them with a light cast bullet load and final fire form. Oddly, my cases are shorter than the ones I already had from Buffalo Arms... they also use 348 Win. I'll see if they stretch on firing. I feel anyone with the above equipment can easily make their own cases. SW ***edit: I fired all the cases I made with a light cast load & they are still shorter than Buffalo arms brass. Still, they worked fine.*** |

what I do when I chuck up brass in a drill press i insert a piece of dowel into the case mouth then chuck it up. it does not deform or leave chuck marks in the case necks. |
