I was in Cabelas to get some freeze proof fishing line and came across this on sale:

Image

The 19.99 price point was somewhat agreeable.

Image

I like the gray "scales" and matte powder coated blade.
Packaging says it is 440 C stainless steel- which is more info than the tiny gerber mentioned here had.

Image

Of course with the ridiculous pocket clip. It will be removed if I decide to carry it.
Blade is about 3". Not sure about this shape. I normally prefer a slightly shallower profile, but I'll give it a chance.
Blade steel seems to be even and non-porous on first inspection,
despite the china marking.
Will have a bit more when I can get around to using it.

Noticed the CRKT M-16 speed folder has dropped 9 dollars in price.
Wonder if it is to be discontinued....
That is a profile I like, and actually a pretty good knife.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

i have the gerber thats a match to that save a couple tiny details - more screws in the handle , serrated area of edge on the blade , ive found it quite nice - very sharp , keen edge that holds its ability to cut , lightweight and my clip works fine but i added a lanyard my purposes , i kinda like the size - it fits in a mag pouch for one of my small carry guns

i think you will like that one , im certain they were meant to look alike as they are nearly identical ,

I gave the Cabela's knife to my sister.

Went back with the intent of buying the CRKT M-16, but ended up doing a little better with some sale price items.

Gerber "Suspension" multi-tool. There's an adjunct to the model name that escapes me right now.
I'm not really a fan of serrated knife blades, partial or otherwise.
This tool has implements that actually lock into place.
The can opener is killer, as are the scissors.
It was a bargain cave item with no packaging, or sheath.

Image

Of course, I needed another knife to replace the one I gifted out....

Image

This is a blade profile and size that appeals to me.

Image

It is a fine edge series knife with a gray "gunmetal' coated blade.
I don't know a thing about 7 Cr. I had one before with this designation~ a Gerber Gator that was insanely sharp out of the box.
This one has a nice edge- not a sharp as the Gator, but still entirely usable.

Image

There it is with the tiny para-frame mentioned in another post here. Over cast lighting causes the blade to photo as chrome, which it is not.

This knife came with an over-latching problem.
They installed a detent ball on the frame lock to prevent the knife from opening in the pocket. If it had been done properly with a dimple on the blade, instead of an oversized hole, all would be fine. As bought, it was almost impossible to open.
I had to dis-assemble the knife and remove the detent ball from the lock spring.
Knife works as it should now- a one-handed opener. I removed the useless pocket clip while I had the tools out....

I have another new Gerber fine edge series knife that has been in the camera bag for at least 2 years, and it still has not seen any use. Will post up on it later after I can get some photo's done. It is slightly large for pocket carry and deserves a proper sheath...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Newest Gerber has resided in the watch pocket of my jeans for the last 10 days or so.
I used it to clean a grouse, and it effortlessly cut the necessary tendons and joints with minimal effort. Very nice edge on it for factory. Also used it for the usual braid fishing line cutting duties, and everyday tape slitting. It seems to be holding it's edge well.

Doc Sharptail

I have been carrying the latest Gerber for about 2 months now.
I still haven't had to sharpen it. It does get used a fair amount.
For a knife this size, the spine is a little thick, otherwise no complaints.
That CRKT M-16 is becoming an un-scratchable itch...

Maybe a little later this spring...

Doc Sharptail

I am bad for giving away knives and multi-tools.

Bit of a convoluted story to this...
Wife had bought me a chainsaw for Christmas.
Only problem with it is it's plug-in electric, which makes it totally unusable for what we need.
It went back, and she selected a new multi-tool for me to replace the Gerber I had gifted to eldest daughter, who rarely receives gifts of any kind.

Image

Leatherman Side-kick multi-tool.

Image

I actually like that blade profile a lot.
I would not mind finding that in a 3-1/2" folding pocket knife.
This one will do for the next little while.

Image

Box sticker says made in U.S.A.

I also gave away the larger Gerber pocket knife pictured above in this thread. I will work on a replacement for that on my own...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail
