This is the present to me mentioned earlier...

Image

It's an "Industry Brand" QB 78-D. It's a chinese knock-off of the old Crosman 160.

Image

That's not a bad piece of lumber for Beech/Birch. It's very densely grained wood, what ever it is. Gun was ordered n.i.b. off the internet, and I had no idea what to expect for stock wood. I'll have a bit more on it, when it gets down to the shootin....

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Yessir. It takes 2 of the 12 gram carts at a time. There's a bit of a machinist's fraternity up here that sometimes sell nice things. It won't be on Co-2 for long, if I have anything to say about it....

You come close with the compressor comment. What I have in mind is a slightly spendy replacement tube that will handle 3000 psi. Actual operation will see a lot less than that- I'll be looking for around 1500 or less, and a hand pump. The production valve that is in the gun locks above 1500. Target is 20-30 shots with the 16 gr predator doing 750 fps or better. It's achievable, with a bit of a time and work investment. That low shot count is due to the tube acting as reservoir. I'd rather take that route, than lug tanks and bottles around. It'll be a grouse an wabbit gun. I really don't want to hang a bottle on the gun...

One of the drawbacks to buying chinese is the low q/c v@lues. I'd like to run some tests on CO-2 to see how the gun shapes up, firstly. I can't seat the tube cap, cause it looks like a cylinder hone busted inside the tube. I'll try massaging out the ridges and gouges with what I have on hand. If that don't work, I'll have to order in a replacement factory tube...

Doc Sharptail

Got it shootin, finally. Took a bit of polishing the inside of the tube, and de-burring the breech end of the bbl on the inside. Shoots like this now:

Image

To say I'm pleased would be a bit of an understatement. For a n.i.b. air rifle with only 30 pellets through it, this is what I like.

Image

Here's a somewhat blurred look at it with the open sights removed, and a Bushnell Banner 3 1/2- 10X aboard. With 2 fresh carts in it, a 18.1 gr Exact Heavy pellet in the breech, and the scope, it just nudges 7 lbs. I'm pretty happy with this. Very next purchase I'll be making is the H.P.A. tube...

Doc Sharptail

I'm not too sure where to put this, so here it goes, for now. If it's gotta be moved....

At any rate, the HPA tube is on order. Good thing I got my ear to the ground, regarding supply ;) It should be here Wednesday some time.

Been doing a bit more shooting with it:

A bit of a relief to see it likes the Predators.

From what I've been reading on this gun and tube, I should be able to better by quite a bit, than what I was hoping for in terms of velocity. Found out that the tubes are tested at 4600 psi to achieve that 3000 psi operating rating.

It ain't all apples and gravy yet. Still gotta scrape up for the pump, but that will come. As long as I have it all together and tuned by grouse season...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

First complete tear down will be hopefully sometime this week. A visit to an electrical supply is in order- a 3 foot long screw driver is required to get that valve out. It's a pig on gas right now, and the internals definitely need some attention.

This is a whole new platform for me, and I've got quite a bit to learn yet- and much reading to do. May not be able to hold myself back from that slightly spendy pump for long....

Doc Sharptail
