I was thinking of a 41 mag but I already have a supply of 44 Spl brass on hand - also bullet molds. Not so easy to find for a 41. Now to cast boolets. Got a holster already. SW

Got it in today & am all happy with it! Ruger did a couple things right for a chage. Like the idiotic "be careful - this is a gun... keep out of reach of terrorists" stamp is on the bottom of the barrel. That's a big improvement!

And like the original flat tops, it has a Micro rear sight. Took it out & murdered most of a hundred rocks & pine cones. Shoots well with cast handloads, it does!

Look! No easily visible risk management stamp!

Took it apart for cleaning after I shot it & tweaked the trigger spring for a trifle lighter pull. I'll run several hundred rounds through it before I take it apart to be slicked up & trigger job. SW

Now you need a companion chambered lever gun to go with it, on those hikes through the buttes.

The flat cotton dremel disks work well with jeweller's rouge on those investment trigger parts... if the lock work's anything like a single-six, it'll slick up fast with that treatment...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. Haven't shot it in years. I usually carry a Marlin 1894CP = a 16" ported 357 when little badgers are out. Mom badgers get VERY pi$$y with everything that moves then. I'd never shoot unless teeth tracks on my hide were imminent.

I have a Cratex flexible abrasive kit for my Dremel. After I shoot more, the wear places wiil be more apparent & can be addressed to effect.SW

Very nice. There is one of these for sale near me. Asking $500 so I haven't gone for it yet. However, I like the caliber. I've had a S&W Mod. 24 that I liked a lot. I've got .44 everything except the brass. I looked up the price of those at a local shop not long ago and they were $35 per C for WW. Everything has become so costly these days.

I've got a .41 Mag (S&W Mod 57, 8-3/8 in bbl) which is a wonderful revolver. I rarely shoot magnum loads. I have my ".41 Special" load. Same case, 7.4 gr. 231 powering the Elmer Keith pb bullet. Many years ago, my cousin gave me an mold for it. At one of the gun clubs where I'm a member, word got out that I had the mold and a few guys asked if they could borrow it. Each time I got the mold back, it came with a few hundred bullets they'd cast for me as a courtesy for the use of the mold. I'm set with it for a while.

Years ago, I remember listening to an older shooter tell me how he had to give up his .45's due to having arthritis in his hand. At the time, I was a little in wonder at how that might be. Now, I'm right there and understand fully. That's a good endorsement for not shooting magnum loads.

I'm to the point that if I might need mastadon whackers in a magnum handgun, I'll take a rifle. The 44 Spl is just about right for me. I have a 1927 SAA Colt in 44 Russian/Spl but I think it's going to be a safe queen now.

Elmer Keith was always after hot handgun loads, but I think he had an actual need. He was a real deal cowpoke & was most often on some snorty nag that would leave him with a broken rifle stock sooner rather than later. If not lost after an impromptu rodeo. I have an 1888 Marlin lever action with stock damage. It very much appears a sweaty horse rubbed it against a fence while scratching an itch.

I gave 435 for this at auction - they are not cheep. Seller had good feedback & shipped right away. First new gun I have bought in a long time. I've errands to run this AM - like go pay property tax - but this afternoon I'll take it out for another 100 rounds. I've got a bunch of slpit neck 44 mags I'll try to trim down, too.

Took a trip off from work & it feels good to goof off & rest up a bit. SW
