Wife wanted to go to one that I had not been to before.

Got some decent stuff....

That's a real stag handle set. Not Puma, but still very cool:

Atkinson Bros Sheffield steel. It says EN Forged inside the logo.
This was very upscale stuff when I was a kid. These guys had a really
good reputation for quality cutlery. For 5 bucks, I couldn't turn it down.
We needs a set in the house anyways. Looks like it was sloppily re-edged on a power belt. Shouldn't take too much to clean this up.

Image

Actually needed these. I gave away the cheep little Bushnell 8 x 21's that these are replacing. 10 x 25 may be a bit of a handful on grouse hunting. They sure are sharp, and a definite improvement over the Bushnell. All of 8 bucks

Canon SX 270 Powershot digital camera.
This is very upscale for it's time period~ Canon's best non-SLR digital for about 3 years. Case body on it is aluminum, rather than the later carbon fiber bodies.
20 bucks OTD. I is extremely pleased with myself...

I use a Canon very similar to that for informal photography. I most like the ability to upload everything into my laptop via USB cord. Same one works for my big Canon, too.

Yep - great scores! SW

After a few quick snaps with the new to me canon...

I think the lens on it is optically superior to the 120 IS Canon that I had bought new.

Image

Slightly warm 270 case I picked up on the trail last fall.
Edges aren't bad, and center is still acceptable.

Image

About 45 yds at the 90mm optical limit of zoom.
Digital zoom extension has the usual amount of noise.
I won't even bother with it.

Image

The 45 wide end shows Canon's propensity for aperture priority on auto "A" setting.
Not bad at all for quick informal work.

Image

Un-cropped daylight portraiture at about 3 feet. Image center tends to slight softness, but nothing of major concern at all. I have yet to take a blower brush and clean the lens.

I am pretty impressed with this. The cast aluminum body gives a bit of re-assuring weight that I haven't seen in a point and shoot since Kodak's early entry level digital offerings..

Back-yard interloper at the 45 wide setting and "A" auto mode.
This tiny creature is about the size of my fist. About 6 ft. distant.
I can get quite close by not moving at all...
Cropped on my laptop's editing suite. This is actually an improvement over the Nikon point and shoot I had tried previously. I still have to do a search to bone up on this camera. It came with a manual for a completely different camera...

Image

C-130 Hercules heavy lift/ search and rescue aircraft at 17 Wing Winnipeg.
Taken at the max 90mm optical zoom and manual exposure setting. 1/60 sec @ F-8.6, ISO 200. Still not bad, even though the a/f sensor got fooled a bit by the chain link fencing. About 750-800 yds. Cropped on the Imgur site...

This I'm starting to like an awful lot. Time to dig out the 120 IS Canon Powershot for a direct comparison...

This little point and shoot has good capabilities, IF conditions are right....

Image

Raven at about 15-20 feet. 1/125 sec at F 8.6, ISO 100. 90 mm zoom setting.
About a 75% crop on my laptop's photo editing suite.
Very little pixilllation at these settings. Wonderful when daylight cooperates

This camera needs strong light and low ISO speed settings for quality images.
Quite impressive when conditions are met...

I ended up with this at the princely sum of 12.99 at the local thrift store.

There's a reason for it ;) ...

The battery in the SX 270 HS pictured above is losing capacity.
Rather than pay the $70.00-$80.00 camera store price for a new NP-6L battery, I got this.

Processor is a bit newer with slightly more active focus points, and speedy face detection.

None to sure about WI-FI and GPS.
I may use the GPS when I make it back up the escarpment.
Haven't decided yet.
Other-wise, it's the same camera as pictured above,
with the same tiny sensor.
It still had the demo S/D micro card in it with a total of 6 frames on it.
It will take a bit of a clean-up, but not too bad.
At least I have 2 batteries now, for far less than a new replacement would cost.

That's pretty close to my daily driver. I picked it since it uses the same USB cord as my big Canon. SW
