They are lettered and numbered as per the old filter convention standards from about 50 years ago.
The yellow is a 40-Y, the orange a 60-O and the red a 60-R. The grey one is n/d for use in brilliant daylight.
There is one filter inside the lens marked normal. I googled the original instructions. They say that the lens was designed to focus through a filter, and should not be used without one. The filter marked normal looks like a late 70's U/V filter to my eye.

The above may explain why I had so much trouble to get the first filter-less lens to focus properly at the infinity mark.

We shall see, but not today. It's cold enough here to freeze the gonads off an angry silver-back gorilla, especially with the wind chill. We sometimes get a couple of above freezing days in early December. I may get a shot at it then...

Doc Sharptail

I thought I had quit buying film cameras

This one was found to be in exc ++ condition.
I have a bit of an emotional attachment to it- my very first camera was this model of Nikkormat.
It's an FT-2, and very likely my last film camera for a while

My hands knew what was in them right away when I asked to look at it.

Doc Sharptail

Your last film camera for a while? I know - if I believe that, you have a real estate deal for me! ;) :rotflma: :rotflma: :rotflma:

Sweet looking camera! SW

Ahem...

Image

Another Nikkormat
This is actually a variant I have not seen in person before, and made considerable effort to stay away from, on account of it's mounting system. Now that I know how to do a/i conversions at home, it's not the big fat hairy deal that it was previously.
Note tab on collar of lens mount. This is what sends an aperture signal to the camera's meter, rather than the rabbit ears prong of the earlier "F" system.
It does have a release to fold the tab down out of the way for un-converted lenses, which dumbs the camera down a bit. It's called "stop-down" metering. The depth of field preview button must be pressed in for an accurate meter reading at any aperture setting other than wide-open.
This thing is built like a tank, and will run at all speeds regardless of battery condition. With a dead, or no battery condition, there's simply no metering. Then the camera can still be used with a good eye and the sunny 16 rule.

Image
There it is with it's 50mm f2 Nikkor "H" lens, which is a real gem
I a/i converted it today with my needle and m/b files, and some wet/dry #1000 auto-body paper.

Image

Hefty center crop out of one of the first images taken on the D-810 with it.
f5.6 at ISO 1600 and 1/250 sec. right at sunset tonight.
About 20 yards.
I am muchly impressed by this old glass. It was the choice of pro newsmen back in the day, and saw serious duty absolutely everywhere.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Man, I don't know.
This can be a deep well.
There's a lot to be covered, just starting with black bodies, which I probably won't do.
Then there's the Nikomat line- same camera with different badging for the non-N.American market.
I really don't have to, and probably won't.
I suppose to round out what I have, I should find an FT in chrome.
Pricing is always the definitive factor...
I do like them though.
All have been extremely well made and reliable, as long as one stays away from the EL series, which had pretty wonky electronic shutter resistors.
Out of all of them so far, I like the FT-2 the most.

Doc Sharptail

Sigh... :lam:

I think this is the last computation of the manual focus 50mm f1.4.
The coatings on it are something else.

Now to rig a proper test somehow with a slightly definitive target...
and compare with the already in hand S.C. 50mm 1.4

Doc Sharptail

Nikkor-P 105mm f2.5.
In very good shape.
I will have to a/i convert it over the next couple of days.
It seems pretty nice on the FT-2 film camera.

Image

It came with a some-what dented hood, and a pristine u/v filter.
We'll see over the coming days...

Doc Sharptail

From the cheap blingy lens dept:

Image

Image

Likely a re-badged tomioka/chinon.
It is actually an early lens for a third party variant.
I think this is the first that gave me serious conversion troubles.
The aperture ring was smaller than o/a diameter spec for later nikon.
I had to remove a lot of metal.
I have it to where it will work on the D-810, and just a bit more cutting to get it onto the F-2.

It was 25 bucks o.t.d. and seems a reasonable performer.

Image

At minimum focus distance under a L.E.D. lamp and f5.6.
Not quite as close as a more modern 28/2.8, but not bad at all.

Image

f5.6 again. It's actually a bit weak wide open- quite fringy.
It does the usual blown reds thing. It turns them to orange, which may be correctable in post.
I sort of like the depth it gives.
While it doesn't really compare to the nikkor 28/3.5, it is still quite useable.
There's a vivitar 28 that focused quite close.
I'll see how this does reversed, and on 1:1 worth of manual extension tube...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

I should do a photo of the daily carry bag, as well as a shot of the entire pile, before I go sell off to KEH camera on the 29th.

There is some stuff that I'm willing to part with, before it becomes too un-manageable...  ;)

You are still with us A-Square!
Something on the morning scroll about a Minn. twister...

Image
There's the bag there- a Lowe-pro CarrySport m28.

Image
Opened here...

28" long on the internal 22" deep, 20" from front to back.

Image

That's what is in it this week.

L-R:
105mm f2.5 Nikkor P, D-810 camera with Avenar 28mm f2.8, 200mm f4 Nikkor Q.C., Nikkormat FT-2 with Nikkor H 50mm f2, 135mm f3.5 Nikkor Q, .,Nikkor K 85mm f1.8, Nikkor S.C. 50mm f1.4, Nikkor P.C. 55mm f 3.5 Micro, Nikkor 28mm f3.5 a/i, Nikkor a/i, Nikkor a/i 50mm f1.4.
That is not the full contents of the bag. I got tired of setting things up, and did not photograph the flashes, cords, cables, filter cases, film cans, etc. etc. ad infinitum nauseum :P...
There's a must have in there too, especially with 10 lenses in the bag~ a packet of Zeiss lens wipes that are gentle enough for camera lens coatings.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

yes , im north of alll that , we are getting and have gotten really high winds but just enough to drop the deadwood from the trees and make us leave the motorhome in the drive so far , i do feel for those affected south of us , it does not look good at all , ive not heard from my relatives in northern iowa but i think they escaped it as well , ill be calling again in the morning - but im sure they are ok ,

in the meantime ...............we had a pro photographer at the range taling photos of the trap team for one of the schoo;s that shoot with us , there are eight this year and another five that practice on our range , nearly 500 kids that we count as our regulars , i would love to think they will stick with it ............but i do believe the photos are for the year book , that might remind those that move on in the future hhow much fun they had ,

come to find out the photographer is related to my sister in law who was killed in a car accident in Montana a number of years ago [seems like just the other day ] it left her husband - my brother in law - with a TBI , it has affected the family a lot ,
i personally come from a smaller family , only three of us and all ok so far , my wife on the otherhand comes from a larger family of five - complicates things enough dealing with two , i admire her dealing with four all these years ,

so ...........this photographer set up in the shelter of an outbuilding but had to fight the elements for most of the afternoon to get alll the shots , seems they did individual , group and 'action' shots

it says a lot of the school to allow guns in the yearbook photos - as much as it pains me to say such a thing , i commend them , they are representing our heritage far better than some soccer teem does

More thrift shop finds.
At ten bucks, not bad. Kino/Kiron mfg. 28mm f2, which is fast for that focal length.
It needs a bit of work, which I'll probably attempt before fishing season opens.
The aperture blades are slow to open, and need a good cleaning.
It's pretty glowy/fringy wide open.
I will try manual stop down with it first.

Image

Another 10.00 lens- in excellent condition.
Kobori mfg. 80-200 f4.5.
It is pretty tiny for an 80-200, and probably one of the last slow zooms vivitar commissioned.
Mount features hint at at least mid-80's production.
The coatings on it are very modern indeed.
All the lamp reflections in the photo of it define coating areas inside the lens.
I need a bit of time to see how well it performs.
It may be near equal to the Tamron 70-210 discussed else-where here...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

This is a fairly maligned lens as far as nikkors go.
Pre-a/i early F mount 43-86mm f3.5 zoom.
There is a lot on the inter-web about how truly awful this lens is.
Then there are reports from those that have actually used it saying that it is indeed usable for some photographic situations.

Image

On the FT-2 again showing some of the build quality.
Aperture ring and depth of field scales.

I felt some-what justified in getting this.
I sold off a LOT of stuff that was not being used to the KEH camera circus on Friday morning.
I even let the F3 go, and one of the F2's. I kept the minty chrome F2 though. That one will be pried from my cold, dead fingers :P.

Almost pulled the trigger on a beater first variant F, and then sanity stepped in.
The screen in it was pretty hacked, and I really don't want to invest the time it would take to find a clean "B" or "K" screen.

To get back briefly to topic at hand, the new to me lens has to be a/i converted.
I did try a few frames on my un-coupled extension tube set, and can't find a lot wrong with it other than some slight vignetting that may be the fault of the tubes...

More on this after I get it converted.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Yours truly with a very early Nikon SLR bellows unit.

I'll have some detailed photo's up a bit later.

It is old enough to pre-date Nikon's model numbering system.
More to come when I learn exactly what it is.
It came with a similarly marked slide copying unit and reversing ring...

Doc Sharptail

Caffeine finally kicked in, Huh? J/K!

Just a brief note here that it is a Nikon bellows unit 2-A, which is a slightly improved version of the very first nikon SLR bellows unit.
It came with a slide copying unit that is pretty meow.
Fits on the F-2 and FT-2 film cameras no problem.
I need to use the 12mm extension tube to get it on the hulkingly huge framed D-810.
Even then it's still a bit tricky.
I have a small repair to do to the lens release pin on the front standard.
The staking on it let go a long time ago.
In the mean-time, it's okay to use now that I know what's going on.
I have to take care not to lose that tiny pin.
For now, mounts and dismounts at home only, over a clean white sheet.
Pix later on...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail
