The more I mess around with these, the more interested I become. This German officer's sword appears to be pre-WW1. Blade is engraved "mit Gott fur Kaiser und Reich". (With God for king and country or similar sentiment)

Unpacked it and wifey wanted to run the box through a couple times. Her take - "It will keel!" ;)

With guns being stupid expensive right now, I'm finding these are more affordable. Now to find a decent book on the topic. SW

Nice looking piece. Any maker's marks on it?
Dad brought a couple of blued knives from Europe, and one was a double edged stiletto that was likely made between wars. The stacked leather handle quite nicely off set the blued steel. Often wonder if swords were ever blued or parkerized like some knives I've seen and wanted...

Doc Sharptail

There's a makers mark, but it's completely hidden by the langet.
I'd really like to ID it, but don't want to force anything. SW

A 1943 Russian cavalry saber this time I got from a German auction site. The bajonet was mounted on the scabbard so horse and rider wouldn't get poked while riding hard.

It'll be a while before I have it in hand... It's in Berlin going to Budapest - then to Brussels where I'll pick it up in person when I'm over next time. Which seems to depend on when the virus crap settles down.

These are very uncommon in America. SW

That is actually pretty neat!

Looks like it was made for actual horse back service too.
The felt hilt washer makes a lot of sense- it would eliminate a lot of rattling around in the scabbard...

I doubt it's a war trophy - more like grandpa passed away and somebody sold off his wartime gear. SW

Did a little poking around to discover the saber with attached bajonet is specific to Dragoons = horse mounted troops who fought dismounted as regular infantry.

Rather than cavalry carbines, they carried M91/30 rifles.

This fellow is using a stone to spiff up the edge after hard use. SW

We got a tax refund so time for another toy. An officer's dress sword by Eickhorn. I like the "ruby" eyes. (I'm pretty sure they're faceted glass, but they still look cool) SW

Solingen steel was a "watch for" when I was a kid.

I had a stack on double knife sheath set that was made there.
Very good edge holding, but a bit of a bear at sharpening time.
The 5 1/2" clip point "big one" had a surprising amount of flex to it.
I found that out by doing the worst abuse one can commit on a knife-
Opening cans.

That sword is another piece of artwork!

Doc Sharptail

People must be selling swords so they can afford buck a whack ammo and 100/brick primers! ;)

Swords & daggers seem to be a buy right now. SW

Got it in and took a couple closer pics. Hard to see is the Eickhorn logo which is a squill. (I like squills! ;)

Another shot of the faceted glass eyes and the mark, "D.R.P." Which I thought was for Deutsch Reich Post or German postal service. Big cheeses could have swords or daggers for parades and such. But no - it's for the German patent office. Hard to imagine what needs to be patented on a sword - it's a very basic tool that's been around for a lot of centuries.

I learn something everyday whether I plan on it or not. 8-)

In the end it was an army officer's hand engraved sword for which he paid through the nose SW

Happy birthday to me! (it's not far away) I scored this from gunborker for $125 and had $90 in winning scratch cards laying around to help pay for it.

Imperial officer's sword from late 1800s - early 1900s. Maker's mark has been scrubbed. Seller said the visible logo is for an officer's club in Berlin where uniform accessories and personal weapons were sold. I'm still checking on that.

Overall not too bad. Ray skin still fairly intact - wire wrap tight - straight blade. No scabbard, but for the price, I can live with that. It's not like I'll be wearing it to a parade or something. ;) SW

Probably a bit lighter than it looks too.

Time to start looking for spare pumpkins and melons!
