Got a box from my main man there today containing a German "hirschfanger" or deer stabber and a Bundeswehr pilot's survival knife. If hunters wounded a deer, it was considered poor form to blast it again with the rifle. No handguns allowed, so the deer was dispatched with a knife thrust.

Notice the dog heads on the cross guard. The decoration usually seen there are deer hooves. A Euro blade collector thinks this is from an estate of sufficient wealth to have a "master of hound". Most had a master of horse in charge of stable upkeep and veterinary care - this one also had a pro overseeing the hunting hounds. And bottom end employees to keep the "second hand dog food" policed up.

I thought the "Gott mit Uns" motto was a military indication, but the engraving is clearly a hunting motif. Possibly a retired officer who wore it only to National Hunting Association meetings and parties - possibly to impress Goering who was a big cheese in that organization.

The pilot's survival knife is Puma and clearly of the White Hunter pattern. These were to be used to escape a crash and survive post-crash. Very hard steel which is typical of Puma.

I likes the pilot knife-especially the form of the handle.

I had an old Schrade sheath knife with a very close variant of that handle.
Completely different blade though. It had a flint rod in a seperate pocket on the sheath for starting fires...
