On the D-810 here. Found it in very nice shape at a price I could live with. Nikkor 50mm f2 at right for size comparison. Depth of field scale is quite narrow, and just barely hints at the shallow focus depth of this lens. At f5.6. Subject distance is about 25 feet. Note short zone of focus here. About 150 yards, I think. Un-cropped. There's a 50% crop of the above image. Vibration from the cat back-hoe's big diesel is apparent here. Sharpness test at f8, IIRC. The 1/250 sec shutter speed is obviously a little too slow for a lens this long. 95-100% crop. 60% crop of a couple of raven's nests at about 250 yds. I think I am going to be in for some nice imagery with this. A mono-pod, or a tripod will help a lot. I also have to get an eye-cup for the D-810's view-finder. I am getting a lot of snow glare onto the eye-piece, and it becomes a problem with long lenses. I really like this lens, despite all the bulk and weight. Now to find a slightly bigger bag, and a soft case for the lens... Regards, Doc Sharptail |

You might even need a used golf club cart for your kit! SW |

Got a much older variant of this lens over the weekend in a package deal. It's a Nikkor H 300mm f4.5, likely late 60's, early 70's production. It's focusing ring is a LOT smoother than the more modern counterpart discussed above. Focus throw is a lot shorter. It may be one of those finicky lenses to focus, and require a tri-pod at all times. We shall see... Not much for photos with it yet- the rear element was quite hazed by tobacco smoke, and I was having trouble focusing it at distance. After a lengthy cleaning session, I'll try again. I like the simplified tripod foot on this- there are no release knobs sticking out and taking up valuable bag space. Regards, Doc Sharptail |
