Just sent off the funds for this one - got it through a private deal on another site. Now to research how best to make ammo for it... which could get pricey. Buffalo Arms lists brass @ $58 for 20!! :-o And dies for $147!!! :-o :-o

So I looked through Nonte's cartridge conversion book to see one of the rounds the Dutch used has a .457 bore - meaning I could use 45-70 boolets of which I have a good supply. That round can also be fire formed from 45-70 so there is hope.

The other cartridge? Looks pretty bleak for cheep ammo. Never say die, though! 8)

Dutch Mosin,

What became of these rifles after Holland switched to the Mannlicher rifles? Were they issued to native levies in the far corners of Holland's colonial empire? SW

First let me congratulate you with this beautiful piece of Dutch history.
That's a very good looking rifle.

Now, to answer your question, here's the story of the Beaumont rifle in a nut shell
In 1895 Holland switched to the Mannlicher M95 in cal 6.5x53R.
After this date the Beaumont rifles were still used in the Dutch East Indies.
Around 1910 most of the Beaumont rifles were converted to hunting rifles.
Some of them however were kept in service by the Dutch military as training rifles until May 1940 when Holland was invaded by the Germans.
After the war the Dutch army was rearmed by the allies and received the Lee-Enfield, the Garand and the M1 carbine.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Martin,

Thank you!!! I do not actually collect Dutch rifles, but I very much enjoy shooting the obscure Euro BP cartridge rifles. It's fun to find an accurate load where no data exists.

This fellow asked a question on another site & mentioned he might be selling them, so I struck up a correspondence & offered 200 for one which he accepted.

Do you ever see unprimed brass for these in Europe? SW

If you find cheaper brass, let me know. I think maybe 45-90 or 50 basic (one of those....can't remember) can be used but you have to fork out the dough for the dies. I would like to find a calibrethat can be fireformed instead.

I will be trying all the cheep routes first! I have high hopes I can just fire form 45-70 like Mr Nonte says... if it's the common Beaumont caliber. SW

I talked to one of the members of our gun club who owns a Beaumont rifle too.
He bought his reformed brass (30 pcs) in Germany.
They were €2.50, that’s $3.50 a piece.
That may seem much, but we don’t need a license for these rifles as long as we shoot BP in them.
The minute we use modern powder the rifle has to be put on a “shooters license”.
You have to know that over here we have a maximum of 5 fire arms on the “shooters license”.
For original BP weapons there is no limit.
Only the ammo appears on the license, so you can buy the components to reload.
He also bought himself a LEE bullet mold in cal .457.

Using BP instead of modern powder means no die set and the cases last a life time.
OK….you got more cleaning to do, but “gun law wise” it’s easier and cheaper to use BP here.
Personally I like to use my Vetterli every once in a while just “for the smell of it”.

Keep us posted on your search for Beaumont ammo and if you ever come across another Beaumont rifle for that price “give me a call” OK!!!!!!!

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Martin,

The fellow has another one! He had 3 - sold one to me - kept the other for himself and one remains. He describes it with a good bore. 200 USD + Freight. I'll send his phone # via PM. SW

I just tried 45-70 brass & the extractor won't grab the rim. It barely grabs with .348 Win. brass :-?
