Picked this up at a small local show.
I was drawn in by the 4mD clone mount.

Savage 4X

Made in Japan.

Image

Missing a screw on the underside.
Scope seemed okay at the show, and in the car afterwards when I focused the eye-piece properly on the plain fine cross-hairs.

Between the vibration of driving it home and me manipulating it to clean it, the cross-hairs collapsed.
I think the missing screw on the bottom of the scope is the reticle cell retainer.
Not at all lost yet- I may be able to come up with a repair out of all the 3/4" tube scope junk laying around here.
This is the first Savage scope I have seen in person, and of course it was only a 20.00 bill...
I like the steel turret caps a lot.

Next stop was a small local flea market.
I was actually looking for nikon mount m/f lenses....

Came across this RCAF alumni lapel pin, and I actually needed one to replace the last that was lost to a broken tack shaft.
Heavily worn, but it's going back on my dress jacket.
Once an Air Force brat, always- through and through :P

Then, from the same place, a strange little knife that has been worked on quite a bit.
These Premier branded knives have always been around, for most of my life.
The better originals were made in Japan, and were well made of good quality steel.
The original fake stag, or rosewood (depending on the model and price) scales, not so much.
Someone went to the trouble of replacing them with horn style micarta, which is actually sort of cool to my eye.
The knife has been extensively cleaned on a soft wheel- there are wheel marks on everything on this one.
Straightened out a kink in the main blade, and sharpened both.
It takes a good edge quite quickly, for which I am eternally grateful.
It needs a bit of oil to loosen up the tightness in blade opening.

Image

Country of origin mark and steel type.

Image

Main blade fully locks into the open position.
The closed secondary blade must be de-pressed inwards to release it.
Did I mention I like it? Yet? ;)

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

I found the B & L mark in a diamond when I took the mount off. Mount may be a true 4m4d series mount. I doubt it's original to the scope. Stroebel has no info on the Japan made Savage scopes at all, other than that they were made.

There's the markings there.
The mount is almost surely a Mossberg- it has the extra screws for retaining the claw to the mount when the cross screws are completely out.

The Savage scope is gonna hafta go on the backburner for a while.
The 20mm dia. Weaver parts I have here will not fit in the 18mm inside dia. tube of the Suwa/Savage.

In the mean-time, I found some stuff I didn't realize I still had, in looking for parts for the Savage scope.
I found a really minty J.C. Higgins 4X (Weaver G-4), Weaver B-6 6X, a minty Banner 6X 40mm with the Bausch and Lomb mark on the bottom of the tube, and a couple of Bushnell Custom .22 rifle scopes. I particularly like all of them. The 2-7X custom .22 scope is deserving of some range time. I wonder if it's retained any of it's nitrogen charge, after all this time.

Also found an old red-dot- a Tasco BKRD 30-22. Got a new battery for it, and it lights up just fine. The 30mm objective works well on pistols, and it's 5 m.o.a. dot is actually a positive for that type of use.
So many scopes and guns and airguns, I can't keep track of it all...
Best of all, I still have the first variant open turret Weaver B-4 4 X

Doc Sharptail
