Image

Image branded 70-210mm f4.5-5.6

Image

It was manufactured by Cosina, who put out some pretty good glass on occasion.
Couldn't turn it down on price- 20.00 and taxes OTD.
I thought it was a Tokina at first, just based on build quality.
After a bit of google search, found my self corrected.

Image

At 70mm and f 5.6, ISO 400.
This continual overcast is something we don't usually get this time of year.

Image

At 210mm and f5.6, ISO 400.

Image

At 210mm again, as above.

What I can't get over is the diminutive size.
I'll get some comparison pics of it up later with some of the larger zooms from just a year or two earlier than this. Very likely early 80's manufacture...

Cosina made Image lens at left, Tamron 103-A 80-210mm at center, and Vivitar 80-200mm at right.
The Tamron is 1/3rd of a stop faster than the other two.
The Image lens is sure a lot smaller, and a bit easier to manage bag-wise.
I'll do a bit more work with it yet...

Are you giving anything up with the shorter length? SW

Not really.
I can't find much wrong with it at all.
I am convinced this is a C/D lens~ as in computer designed, where the optical path and lens shapes
and coatings are worked out.

It pin-cushion distorts a bit throughout the zoom range, and there are slight lateral chromatic aberrations wide open at 100 X on this screen.
I have some Nikkor primes that behave in a similar fashion, so I'm not that far behind the curve at all. It's a bit of a wunder-kind in my book.
The only real set back to it is it's overly long minimum focus distance, but the bigger ones pictured suffer the same problem.

I have a bit more to do with it yet.
In the mean time, it's very nearly the optical equal of the Tamron 103-A pictured above, which is almost 1-1/2 times the physical dimensions....

I'd really like to see how it does at long range, and determine how close to actual infinity it will focus.

Under the usual dark over-cast.
ISO 400 and f5.6 at 210mm.

Image

Untouched except for re-size, straight out of camera jpeg.

Image

Corner crop of the image above at about 85%

It will focus to just slightly past infinity at the 210mm mark.
Will have to wait for better daylight to check contrast on this.
I think it's going to be o.k.

Another compact zoom- this one a Tokina 80-200mm f 3.5-4.5.

Image

This has been here for a while- a thrift store score made a day or two before we went up north this summer. I had put it away, and forgotten all about it until it turned up while looking for something else.

Image

Basic aperture ring and depth of field scales.
This is one the few third party lenses I have that focuses in the same direction as a nikkor.

Image

Quick, informal artificial light test taken at minimum focus distance of slightly over 4 feet. High ISO here at 1600, and wide open at the variable f3.5-4.5 at the 200mm setting, which is very likely f 4.5.
Not too shabby at all...

This is a mid 80's lens, and one of the last decent manual focus lenses that Tokina did before going auto-focus.
I'd like to get it outside, and capture the the little red fox squirrels chasing off the much larger grey bushy tails. Lot of that been happening the last few days...
