The Ishapore 2A and 2A1 actions are a directcopy of the Lee Enfield No.1 Mark III actions that were originallydesigned for a lower pressure cartridge (.303). That being said I was originally told that the metal used inthe action for the 2A series was "upgraded" to compensate for the increased pressure. More recently, there was a thread on another forum that claimed to have analyzed the metallurgy of a 2A and found itto be no different from a No.1 mark 3 action.

All this being said, the Ishapore factory was established by the British and was run with systems of testing and inspection that was uniform throughout the Empire. Of course these rifles were built after independence but there is no proof that standards declined (that I have heard of).

I believe that Ishapore would have proof tested the rifle (and indeed the proof stamps should be there) with an overcharge round. The 7.62 NATO and the 308 Winchester are almost identical rounds with one notable exception - the 308 Win is loaded to a higher pressure in most commercial ammo.

I myself own several of these rifles and only shoot 7.62 NATO rounds through them as I believe this is prudent. On a practical note, theuy shoot extremely well with them and milsurp ammo is cheaper than commercial 308 WIn.

If I was to reload for them,I would load to pressures equivalent to the 7.62 NATO.

I just finished up this 1965 Ishy all numbers matching. Blasted all the cheesy flaky black indian paint off the medal then Dura coted it matted black. It took a few days to get the furniture cleaned up these suckers come packed with tons of cosmo and all kinds of black nastiness!

I must say this stock was a pain in the balls to get clean I finally used Castrol super clean to get all the oil and stains out of the wood. It comes in a purple gallon jug for around 8 bucks. You can find it at the local auto parts store maybe Wall Mart. It will take off all off the cosmo rid the stock of all the oil and stains and take most of the sh!tty Indian paint off of the metal too. It will also take the skin off your hands, WEAR GLOVES and EYE PROTECTION if you decide to use it
