I ordered the CMP Service grade H&R Garand. It basically is not their best grade which is the 'Correct' grade, but it is the best of their rebuild grades. Not being critical, but critiqueing; the rifles barrel, receiver, sights and op rod were all as made in 1954. They were virtually new and unused. It had a new trigger mechanism, but it was of International Harvester manufacture. The bolt was a Springfield with a noticably worn finish. The stock was GI, soaked with oil and complete with many dings and scratches. The stock I felt really detracted from the looks of the rifle overall, and I decided to sand and clean up the stock as best I could which I usually won't do. It came out decently I think, and the refinished stock got rid of many of the little dings and scratches and gives it a clean well cared look. Most Garands went thru several rebuilds, the later ones (53-55)stand a good chance of having the best barrels, and best finishes. That's why I chose a post Korean War gun over the usually more worn Springfield WW2 rifle.

Ordered it the week of Thanksgiving, so it took 6 weeks. The stock as you see it has been refinished. Previously it was dark, nicks, scratches etc. I want to keep the stock military, so I don't want a Boyd's. I refinished it leaving the cartouches intact. The MW/TE was not listed. The barrel/receiver looks like it was test fired only. You can see the copper left in the barrel in the photo. There was not a speck of carbon on the gas piston, so it had to be near 0 or 1. Like I said, looked as it was an unissued barrel-receiver. Shame they swapped out the bolt. Well worth the $618. I see guns far, far worse than this far $950. I am spoiled, I ordered a Rock-Ola carbine this week. They are rare, and may not get it.

Nice one!!! Actually their nicest grade is the "collector" grade... I picked up a Springfield service grade last month - think yours has a nicer stock though. Here's mine:

fin,you are right, collector grade. My stock was originally worse than that, dark with a lot of dings and scratches. I sanded carefully keeping the cartouches, degreased, and then used 4 coats of Tung Oil.
