1926 Ithaca 20 Gauge Auto & Burglar Gun

Hello. What I believe I have is a 1926 Ithaca 20 Gauge Auto & Burglar Gun / New Ithaca Double (NID). I can only find reference online to the Auto & Burglar model being a pistol - which this is not. It's a regular full size shotgun. Anyone ever hear of it? Thanks!

The Auto & Burglar is in fact a hand gun - a smoothbore pistol that falls under the NFA laws. The good news is that registration is only $5. I haven't seen one offered for sale in several years, but they are valuable... if transferred legally. SW

yup in 1926 you could satill own most things without a BATF agent living in your guest room , new laws to combat organized crime limited that ,

and now new laws to regulate law abiding citizens makes it costly and paperwork cumbersome ,

i suspect someone made that one 'legal' back when the sawed off shotgun laws were enacted ,

When was the sawed off law enacted? This shotgun has been in my closet for 40 years :)

If it's not a handgun, then someone has altered it as mentioned above. The value is now a tiny fraction of a real Auto & Burglar. SW

In original form it would have barrels no longer than the forearm and with a pistol butt. Looks like someone found barrels and stock to fit so the only thing original is the action.

Hmmm... Serial number on the barrel is 437540 with a +4 notation on the left barrel and a +2 notation on the right. The piece of wood that holds the barrel on is marked 437540A. The piece of metal that sits inside that piece of wood is marked V437540. The chunk of metal that says Auto & Burglar Gun (receiver?) is marked 437540. Makes it sound like a factory job. The thing is absolutely beautiful I'm just not quite sure what it is...

IIRC the laws were enacted in the 30s , prohibition thing - tommy guns and sawed off shotguns ,

maybe the factory built some that way but im thinking a gunsmith 'fixed' this one for someone who loved it to use ,
