The narrative sez these "came from the ground" which I find hard to believe given the condition. I do believe the "black market" part, though - especially the full auto stuff.

There's a lot of metal detecting interest in Russia, and clubs pay cash rewards for productive tips. I suspect they make that back selling MGs & ordnance to shady types.

But would criminals really want a Martini, Carcano or Lebel? I very much doubt it.

The stuff shown here languishes in a "police locker". SW

Curiouser and curiouser... I went over the pics slowly and found an 8mm conversion Carcano. Which were made postwar and exported to Arabic countries... except for 1941 Terni 8mm conversions... about which very little is known.

I am not able to explain this. So were 8mm conversions actually used in Russia? There's quite a story behind this one - if we only knew what it was. BTW, this is not one of the Kreighoff conversions. SW

Not only the Carcano but how about the AK 47's and 74's. How did they happen to be battle field dug ups? There is even a few chinese officers daggers in the pile, Of the period yes, but why in Russia? Perhaps Et2ss is correct.

...yeah...most of the stuff looks too" minty " to be dug....I'm guessing confiscated stuff from collections.....boy,a few very nice SA/SS daggers....I always thought those were neet and still would love one for the mini-manroom militaria collection here...mebbe someday...

Having done a little homework, I now believe "under the ground" is used in the same context as "underground". Like an illicit network of gun dealing.

Which seems to make more sense than dug up. SW

'Under the ground'= 'underground', I'll buy that. Would explain the more modern weapons as well as the condition a lot better than having been ground dug.
