This subject got started in another thread so I'll answer it here and add a question.

Good suggestion about the 35mm slide scanner, Mario. However, I don't anticipate scanning any more slides, at least not for a while. I had some scanned years ago but had forgotten about the Bob Hope show images and a few others. The service I paid to do it charged 39 cents apiece but they were horrible to do business with. Archaic business model, not suitable for online biz. Their whole approach to biz was chicken-sh*t. When I forgot to put my email addy on the confusing, cluttered order form, they charged me 50 cents for a mailed invoice. Didn't take credit cards; made me pay a deposit by check in advance, then pay another check to close out the transaction. Ugh.

Okay, you tech wise people. How about a suggestion for this. I've got a suitcase of 8mm home movies that my dad took from 1950's to 1970's, lots of good stuff with old cars and so on. What is the best way to get these converted to CD/DVD?

I had all the home movies Mom took back in the day. My yuppie scum brother - who lives in Orange County, PRK - took them to a walk-in place for conversion.

We had one of those right here in Haystack, but they folded up when chemical photography went the way of the dinosaurs.

If I needed such, I'd use google-fu to find the nearest place doing that type of conversion. Which would probably mean a trip to Denver in my case. SW

...its become quite a lucrative business...just the other day I saw an ad for an establishment-special sale offer... to transfer 10 hrs of VHS tapes over to DVD...for $50 :-o ...I have over 250 home movies on video alone of thethe kids growing up,and life in general...from 1986 to around 2003....most of those tapes were in the SP mode...2 hours video a piece...like you say-do the math  ....also had dozens and dozens of the old 8mm and super8 movies(I think they were 50ft'ers) my parents and grandparent took,so what I did around 15 years ago was to set up the projector and ran the movie while videotaping with the videocam set on a tripod....they came out great...!!!...but now I need to convert THOSE videos to DVD (I suppose you could use the same principal and project the movies but copy them with a digital videocam from which DVDs are easily made) ...rather than finance a Porche for one of the owners of one of those establishments by having then do it,I was considering purchasing one of those dual VCR/DVD machines that will play your video tape AND transfer it over to DVD at the same time...they are a touch expensive-but there is no other alternative I see...will probably do it within the next year...those are the only options I can think of for now... :Dbounce:

I've been copying LPs to CDs using a turn table to digital and I-tunes. The turn table has a usb cable so plugs in directly to the comp..

You might be able to get a cable that converts it to usb.

you got replacement needles for my 'empire' turntable , they are EM not ceramic - i might be able to shrink the belt back to 33 1/3 from whatever it is now , may need one of those too , i suspect it might have encrusted itself to the platter , has not been used since the mid 70s ,
