According to a news brief in my local paper, the Everett (Washington) Herald:

"British and Norwegian jets intercepted Russian military aircraft on Friday (9-14-07) after they breached NATO airspace near the U.K. and Finland, defense officials said. Finland's prime minister demanded an explanation from Moscow. Interception of Russian warplanes in NATO patrolled airspace has become common since the Kremlin ordered strategic bombers to carry out long-range missions for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Russia said it will investigate the Finnish claims, but insisted that aircraft had flown over neutral territory."

It is probably no coincidence that Russia has started taking liberties while the United States finds itself heavily engaged in other areas. Another factor fueling Russian military expansion is increased revenues from the high prices of oil. Russia is a major exporter of oil, so as prices go up, their revenues increase and they have more money available to them for military adventurism.

very pointed observation gary , it seems to me obvious the previous no2 power will try to reclaim its position , particuarly since we insist on rebuilding them , im not a dooms-sayer but we cant trust them - sorry ,its a fact

Not to mention Putin just recently disolved the Russian government. Now he can build it up the way he wants just like old Adolf did.

Well, after posting that last one I went outside and snapped this;

Its a turnaround contrail and there are about 100 of them up there, loud and all day....now if the clouds that are hugging the coast will cooperate, I'll get a full on picture.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me, but Alaska could be the front line in a fight with Russia.

I heard a statement on the radio the other day that China can't afford a war with us-we owe them too much in trade deficit.Could be true.-TR

id not considered that eather gary ....till i was reading hailstones post , it could be an arial thing tho and i guess that makes sence to a certain degree , its the last frontier
