Russian cosmonauts have taken survival guns in their capsule since the first flights. They come down onto solid ground and due to crappy weather, might be in the capsule a while before being picked up.

This drilling is "32 caliber shotgun barrels" over a 5.45 rifled barrel. Cosmonauts were issued hunting rounds and special signal flares.

I don't know that either caliber would settle a bear's hash. SW

i never gave the need for a gun in space a consideration , it never crossed my mind , with weightlessness i never thought it a viable option , more to ponder ................

I want one !
Must have a chat with Natasha's uncle (he did the cosmonaut training) next time we're in Kiev ;-)

I'm with you ANDREY, it would be a great piece to own. Though the calibers they chose do seem a bit odd to me. To small to be real good for hunting or protection from large hungry/dangerous critters and the idea of touching one off in a space capsule or space station with a whole lot of empty nothing on the other side of the bulkhead could very well give a whole new meaning to the phrase "that was a really bad idea".

These were not intended for defense against belingerent Martians or angry Americans, rather as survival guns to be used after landing somewhere in Outer Mongolia.
US astronauts and U2 pilots had survival weapons too. ea "Rambo" knives and High Standard 22lr pistols.
As for calibers, dunno how they figured that. In this configuration I'd go for twin 410 over a 22mag.
