the only assault rifle is the one some person uses to attack another - the person being attacked may have the same rifle but then its a defense rifle . JMHO

"Assault rifle" is just a name made up by the media. Like "SUV" ...

ya hey - that there guy had a whole suitcase full of them there 3 inch magnum type shells - you can shoot chit right out of the sky with them there cartridges , we might be thinkin that might be concernin to the FAA

for what its worth and to put reality back in this discussion - there was a time in this country that they encouraged marksmanship , my father was assigned as a gunner for a B-29 crew in 1943 because he was from the Midwest and could shoot pheasant on the wing -- from the bed of a moving pickup --- with a double side by side , those were days when we appreciated what the citizen could do ,

i think today we are beginning to think in terms only of special forces , it is what the news emphasis is focused on and what we are fed from the white house , it is not the real strength of this country in the end , it is a very strong deterrent and offensive weapon , but in the end - this country will only fall , as we all fall , on our own turf , with our own weapons in hand ,

The military is switching to more highly trained special forces. My son is in a branch of the special forces. When I tell him what the service was like in the 70's he laughs. They want mostly highly trained individuals then large numbers that can shoot straight. Of course the ones that are trained shoot very well. In Irag he told me how the bad guys point their guns up over walls and would just spray bullets at them. So they would just shoot them in the hand when they saw their guns come up over the wall.

welcome M1Dennis , glad you have joined the crowd , i do feel that the special forces of all branches are important and i have not meant to suggest they are anything less than awesome in intelligence , ability , training , and mindset , im just not certain we should always think we will hold the high ground against overwhelming odds , too much of what is out to get us these days are not standing up in a uniform and vocalizing their intent ,

the 'sleepers' and covert cults of terrorist cells are not evident till its too late or we are playing catch up , unless we "dont" like in Benghazi - then Americans die that shouldn't ,

but i forgot - hilery says "what difference does it make" - guess we are to follow suite

I was just relaying what he tells me about how the military is switching focus. He has been in almost 20 years now and is trying to decide if he should get out or stay longer. He likes it in there. He has been over to Irag and Afganistan maybe a dozen times by now. His first deployment was way back in the 90's to Kosovo or where ever it was Clinton sent them in that Yugoslavia thing. Seems no one remembers we went over to protect Muslims at one time.
We don't agree on alot of things but he is very dedicated and serious about what he does. One of the biggest problems he says they have is the restraint they use to not injure or kill civilians and makes it difficult to do their job. I tell him about my fathers stories of in the Pacific in WW2 and their orders to kill Walks Crawls or Creeps and he'll laugh and say that's not how they do it now. But whoever makes the big decisions that is the way they are focusing.

Hey man, glad to have U with us.
The Yugo back in the 90's sure was a strage kinda war.
I was there too, mainly because it was the only war we got ;-)
But that was a long time ago and we was wild then.
To get back on track: I don't see that much practical use for full-auto personal weapons.
A decent caliber (= not a 223) semi-auto will do just fine for the GI.

It takes a lot of training to be good with full auto.

Assault rifle is a relative term... in 1776, a Brown Bess with bayonet attached was an assault rifle. SW

Didn't mean to get off track but yes the media likes to get people stirred up calling everything an assault weapon. I heard a guy on the radio say how they are told to make everything sound worse to make stories better. How many worst storms ever has there been.
I'm in NY which has the evil rifle ban but I have an 1943 Quality Hardware M1 Carbine which is exempt from the ban . Maybe wooden stocks don't look evil. Actually it is the age of it.

Dennis,

Since you're in NY, maybe you can tell me... Wifey's young nephew was here this summer & I took him shooting. He really liked my flintlock pistol & a percussion of the same style.

I'd like to give him the percussion - is it legal to mail one of those to NY? SW

Here is where it gets a little strange. You can go buy a black powder pistol with no pistol permit needed but if you load it without a pistol permit you could be in trouble. I will find out today for you. My nephew is a FFL and what he does part time is transfers guns for people who buy online. I'm not sure if you need the back ground check first for that type to be legal. If you do then it would have to be sent to a FFL and he would pick it up there.
Why you can buy any black powder pistol and all the things you need to fire it but legally you couldn't load it without the pistol permit.
Any AR15 type rifle with a pistol grip is illegal now to buy so they sell them without the pistol grip.I;ve had no trouble buying almost anything I've wanted , takes about 3 minutes for the mandatory background check.
I will get back with your answer .

Thank you!

The nephew was telling me it's illegal for him to buy a cigarette lighter, but he can legally buy lighter fluid... and matches.

Somebody thought that one through! SW

these kind of laws are ridiculous , but the libs/socialist/commies that pass them will one day find themselves entangled in the barbed wire they weave - i believe what comes around goes around - it will may well be their children that pay for their disturbed thinking

Went to the Buffalo Gun Center , the biggest gun store around here and was told it doesn't need a back ground check so it could be mailed but he couldn't load it without a pistol permit. Even though he can buy the supplies for it.
And while I was there I got a 1851 Harpers Ferry model 41 musket .69 caliber converted to a 12gauge. Seems people have been sporterizing military rifles for at least 150 years.
