As in I need a crash course in thinking things through.

Got my performance center 625 Smith & am way happy with it. Not so happy with the safety lock. About as worthless as the magazine safety on a BHP.

Since I got it too late in the evening for a test fire, I removed the safety lock. Nothing hard at all. Take out the hammer and cylinder release before simply lifting the block away. It's a 2 part device, and the 2nd piece is spring loaded. I left it in to fill the frame hole. Tested it carefully to ensure it won't lock the gun up.

The problem began when re-installing the cylinder release. At one point, I zigged when I should have zagged, and the plunger with spring left for parts unknown.

I really wanted to shoot it so I took that part from my race revolver I recently finished & got the 625 back in biz.

Having OCD, I couldn't let the 38/44 languish in unusable condition. Off to the parts pile! Back in the day, SARCO used to offer grab bags of odd ball misc. junk= "double or triple the value of your money!" I'm a sucker for stuff like that & split the haul with a close friend. In one box, I got a Victory model Smith that had been smashed. Cylinder, frame and barrel were trashed, but there were all the internals. These many years later, I found it and removed the cylinder release to grab the tiny plunger & spring. Success!!

Back to the 38/44 with parts in hand and while putting it in... yep... sproiiiiiing!!! Followed by me reciting 3 or 4 pages from the Funk & Wagnalls curse word compendium. What a dummy!

This left me with only one long shot alternative - other than ordering parts - carefully vacuum the floor and run a magnet through the debris.

Lo & behold it worked!!

I very carefully installed the part & got the gun together. Now to leave well enough alone! Wish me luck on that! ;) :crzy: :rotflma: :rotflma:

Here's the revolver with my "match target" Marlin. With Aguila subsonic ammo, it's accurate enough to shoot the chin whiskers off an Amish prairie dog!

Shot the revolver today & am way happy with it. Had a pop can bouncing all over the place. Next move will be a formal sight in. SW

Hogger
Large zip lock bags are your friend when this happens. Just sayin.

Yes. Like I use a big clear dry cleaning bag when assembling an AR lower. But being mentally impaired - or forgetful, take your pic - I forgot about that before I dived in.

Fortunately, it worked out. Lesson learned! SW

I changed a spring in my S&W M1917. Fortunately for me, I didn't have to go looking for it. The clear plastic bag is a great idea. I will certainly steal it from all of you. :lol

I've had many a part bounce off a wall and I have spund hours recovering the part.
I sometimes work in a corner with heavy drapes so any offending launches don't go far.
I have to remember...Mr Dremel is not my friend!

Then there are alien archeologists. When parts fly, they nab them and off to the mother ship for inspection. They then return the part?

Nope! ;) SW
